Wat Phra Nan Sang temple in Phuket
#traveldiaries
It is an ancient monastery about 20 kilometers away from Phuket. In 1785, when the Burmese invaded Phuket Island, they camped as a military camp near the monastery.
The Phra Nang San Monastery is said to be related to a legend of a Thai woman named Phra Nang Lewd.
According to legend, there was a wife of the city chief named Phra Nang Lewd Khao. She had sex with another man. The mayor found out about this, so he was punished. She, a Buddhist, asked to go on a pilgrimage to Sri Lanka before she was punished. When she returned from the pilgrimage, she built a temple in Thanlan (the old name of Phuket) on the way back. Inside the old pagoda, the world's oldest 3 Buddha statues named The Three Kings were offered.
When he returned home, he was sentenced to death. But because she was innocent, she said, her blood turned white. (I don't know if he made a vow to let the blood be white if there was no sin). So later the temple was called Wat Phra Nang Sang ("The Temple Built by a Woman"). It has become a sacred place among the locals
