The bar used to be frequented by sailors, the young and rowdy ones, nicknamed ‘griffins’, used to sit at the back of the bar whilst the captains sat by the window overlooking the river.
Being sat in this historic building was only sweetened by the taste of delicious drinks. If you’re not a drinker, like me, I suggest you try the ‘secret garden’.

1. Hotel Environment
The hotel is located near the Bund. The interior decoration shows its former luxury. Even now, it is still quite large. Although it looks a little old now, many girls still take photos here, which shows that it still has a certain charm.
2. Check-in Experience
The staff helped us with our luggage when we got off the car. We arrived at 11 am, which was before the check-in time, so we stored our luggage at the concierge and went out to play. We checked in at 7 pm. There was a cloakroom at the entrance, followed by a spacious bathroom, a big bed, and a sofa. There was a desk and a recliner in the room. The toiletries were from Aesop. We didn't find any tissues in the room, so we ordered some tissues online and picked them up downstairs. We could occasionally hear the doorbell from next door, but overall it was relatively quiet.
3. Breakfast Experience
Breakfast was semi-buffet style in the restaurant on B1. We tried almost all the dishes on the menu. The scallion oil noodles, small wontons, and butter toast were delicious. The semi-buffet was also quite rich. Although it was not as exquisite as the breakfast at the Peninsula Hotel, it was enough for a comfortable brunch. It is worth mentioning that the waitresses were very nice!
4. Overall Evaluation and Cost Performance
The overall experience was good. We booked with a CMB credit card. Since my friend's card level was high, the basic room type was less than CNY 2,000, which was quite cost-effective. The concierge service was particularly praiseworthy. The staff at the door would use umbrellas to help us get on and off the car when we were waiting for the car. The hotel was very conveniently located. The Bund was right outside the door. The weather was very comfortable for a walk outside, and we could enjoy the night view of the Huangpu River at night. The lights of Lujiazui on the opposite side were beautiful. There were many restaurants and coffee shops nearby, so it was very convenient for dining and transportation.
Although I had an average experience before, the price was nearly CNY 4,000 per night, and there was no obvious difference from a CNY 2,000 hotel. But this time, I felt that there were still many highlights. If you haven't stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, it is worth a try.
This time, I stayed at both the Peninsula Hotel and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Shanghai. With a month to go until Christmas, the Waldorf Astoria lobby already has a Christmas tree.
Walking from the Bund into the former Shanghai Club building from the Republic of China era, carrying a heavy suitcase up the stairs without an elevator, and walking a few dozen meters to the front desk. Fortunately, the Christmas tree in the lobby made me forget my temporary fatigue.
I was given a river view room, not high on the 12th floor. Slightly obstructed, but being able to check in at 9:00 am is considered kind, and breakfast is naturally included. The familiar snowflake marble bathroom, the difference is that aesop has been replaced with a Waldorf Astoria exclusive, which smells good.
The bed in the room is still soft and skin-friendly, and the slippers are more comfortable than before. The turndown chocolate has also been replaced with a Christmas edition. Everything is beautiful.

Toiletries: Can feel the natural fragrance extract, taste preference varies from person to person, it is worth mentioning that the environmentally friendly material toothbrush is more comfortable to use.
Gym: Standard swimming pool did not experience, small and fine gym, well-known equipment is more handy to use. But it does feel a bit small.
Breakfast: Order + self-pick, try a few, freshly made pancake and wonton soup is good.

The 'Waldorf Astoria', a very famous five-star hotel on the Bund in Shanghai.
The building where the hotel is located is a front and rear building, the front is the former Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce, and the back is a newly built building complex.
The old building in front has an elevator and suites overlooking the river, but the number of rooms is limited, and most of the basic types are in the new building at the back.
The place where the car drops off guests is also in the new building, and the old building is mainly a pedestrian area. So in this article, we will introduce it in two parts: the old and the new buildings.
