The Maldives is known worldwide as a tropical paradise. Here are some fascinating facts about the Maldives that you might not know:
• The Maldives are merely eight feet above sea level at their highest natural point, which is lower than every other country on the planet.
• only around 200 out of the 1,200 islands in the archipelago are inhabited.
• the pure white sand of the Maldives is not only looks attractive but it’s actually made from coral. Coraline beaches make up only 5% of the world’s beaches, with most beach sand being made of quartz.
• Shells were used as a method of international trading currency in the 1800s, something which the Maldives had by the bucketload!
• Parliament buildings take different shapes in every country, but things are usually kept pretty comfortable and - importantly - dry for the politicians working inside them. That’s commonly the case in the Maldives, too, except for one day in 2009 when President Mohamed Nasheed asked his cabinet to assemble in an unusual venue, under the sea. At an event designed to raise global awareness and support for the threat faced by the Maldives from climate change, President Nasheed and 10 of his ministers held a full cabinet meeting beneath the waves at which they signed a document calling for worldwide efforts to lower carbon emissions
