Tongji Weir is located near a small village called "Yantou" in the Bihu Plain in southern Zhejiang. It was built in the fourth year of Tianjian in the Southern Dynasty of Liang (AD 505), and has a history of 1,500 years. It is an ancient large-scale water conservancy project in my country and the earliest arch dam in the world so far. The dam is arched, 275 meters long, 25 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. It was originally a wooden strip structure and was changed to a stone dam in the Southern Song Dynasty. Tongji Weir is mainly used for irrigation. It is a water conservancy project with both storage and discharge. It consists of a water retaining dam, a water inlet gate, a three-hole bridge, a channel, and a leaf hole. The Bihu Plain is high in the southwest and low in the northeast, with a drop of 20 meters. Tongji Weir was built according to this geographical situation, thus basically realizing gravity irrigation without external support. The upstream catchment area of Tongji Weir is 2,150 square kilometers, and more than 200,000 cubic meters of water can be intercepted into the weir channel every day, irrigating more than 40,000 mu of grain fields in the central and southern parts of the Bihu Plain. According to villagers, the Zhuge family, a family of weir protectors, have lived near the Tongji Weir for generations. Whenever they see vandalism such as blocking the canal or cutting down trees, they will come out to stop it. During maintenance in the 1950s, a giant pine foundation left over from ancient times was found at the bottom of the dam, which is the pine wood bedding method commonly known as "sleeping cows".
