A giant bronze Buddha stands before you, 15 meters high, so solemn and dignified. The best location to take pictures is to shoot the reflection of the lake from the Mirror Lake outside. It is most beautiful when there are clouds in the sky. 2. #若草山 A hill on the east side of Nara Park, the whole green grass makes people feel comfortable and relaxed. Wakakusa Mountain is high above, and you can overlook the city of Nara from afar. It is especially beautiful and dreamy when the sun sets. The Todai-ji temple near Nara park contains the worlds biggest bronze Buddha statue in an enormous wooden temple built over 300 years ago. The temple is set in grounds surrounded by deer that move around from the Nara park, with smaller temples and shrines dotted around the grounds. The Buddha itself is within a museum and you need to lay about $5 to enter, but it’s totally worth it. It’s absolutely mind blowing, the sheer scale of the Buddha and the structure built to house it is hard to comprehend. There are many smaller shrines inside and some interesting wooden models that shows the construction history. Nara, Japan is a pleasant tourist destination. After exiting Kintetsu Nara Station, turn right into the shopping street to eat some snacks, and go straight to Nara Park/Todaiji Temple to feed the deer. There are a lot of deer. The roadside stalls sell 200 yen deer senbei to attract deer to surround tourists (even if they are bitten for food 😂 Nara gives people a slow and comfortable feeling. Even if you do nothing, it is comfortable to walk aimlessly on the street!

The Toadai-ji Temple is a significant temple within the grounds of the Nara Park. I simply took a look of its outside, and did not bother to queue a long line to see the big Buddha statue inside. Suffice to say, the imposing Nandaimon Gate was itself a sight to behold. Meaning the “Great Eastern Temple,” Todai-ji Temple prides itself in the enormous Buddha statue that graces its main hall, the Daibutsuden. The current Daibutsuden was once the record holder for being the world’s largest wooden building. It was a reconstruction in 1692, and it is already a third smaller than the very original Daibutsuden. The original temple of Todai-ji Temple was constructed in 752 A.D. Emperor Shomu commissioned the construction of this temple to rein in a tumultuous time of epidemic and political chaos. It began as the head temple for all the provincial Buddhist temples of Japan. Emperor Kanmu moved the capital to Kyoto to stay away from the Nara Buddhists that became too powerful. The Todai-ji Temple Buddhists were the ones from whom Emperor Kanmu sought to run away. The bronze Buddha statue of Todai-ji Temple is 15 meters tall in a seated posture. It represents Vairocana, a universal Buddha in the Mahayana Buddhism tradition. On the way to the Todai-ji Temple I went through the enormous and imposing Nandaimon Gate, also a wooden structure. On the sides of the Nandaimon Gate inside stand two large Nio Guardian Kings. The second Great Buddha Hall was completed in 1195 and was burned down again in 1567. The third Great Buddha Hall was completed in 1709 and is the one that still stands today. The Great Buddha inside the hall is Vairocana Buddha, which has been damaged and repaired many times. The current statue was repaired during the Edo period, and only a small part of the Buddha's abdomen and lotus seat are original. The Great Buddha is 15 meters tall and was cast using 437 tons of bronze and 130 kg of gold. Walk around the statue and you will find a hole at the bottom of a round wooden pillar. Legend has it that if you can pass through this hole, which is the same diameter as one of the Great Buddha's nostrils, you will achieve enlightenment. Strongly recommend to visit Todai-ji temple if you have plan to visit Nara. A short trip from Kyoto or Osaka. I purposely travel to Nara just for this. Of course you can enjoy the view at Nara mountain and feed the deer. There are few temples at Nara but Todai-ji is a must, at least for me. You can either take public bus or the tourist bus which only 100 yen compare to normal bus 260 yen.

This temple is over 1,200 years old and has beautiful architecture. It is the home of the Daibutsu or Big Buddha. There is an entrance fee to pay homage to the Big Buddha, but it is worth it in exchange for seeing the Daibutsu, which is over a thousand years old and has a long history. #dreamtrip

#helloautumn Todaiji (東大寺, Tōdaiji, "Great Eastern Temple") is one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. The temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan and grew so powerful that the capital was moved away from Nara in 784 in order to lower the temple's influence on government affairs. Until recently, Todaiji's main hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), held the record as the world's largest wooden building, despite the fact that the present reconstruction of 1692 is only two thirds of the original temple hall's size. The massive building houses one of Japan's largest bronze statues of Buddha (Daibutsu). The 15 meters tall, seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is flanked by two Bodhisattvas.
