Best Things to DoNo.6 of Best Things to Do in Turpan
Museums
Turpan Museum is the second largest museum in Xinjiang. It houses more than 5,000 exquisite cultural relics unearthed in Turpan from the Paleolithic Age to the modern times. It is a miniature encyclopedia for understanding the social, political, military, economic and cultural life of Turpan throughout the ages. The museum has a unique design style, simple and solemn, highlighting the local ethnic characteristics and historical vicissitudes of the Western Regions. The entire exhibition hall is divided into three parts: the exhibition hall of unearthed cultural relics, the exhibition hall of ancient corpses and the exhibition hall of giant rhinoceros fossils. Among them, the exhibition hall of ancient corpses unearthed in Turpan is the most mysterious and attractive exhibition hall. The 11 mummies exhibited here are ancient corpses from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period to the Qing Dynasty, mainly from the Astana-Kharakhoja Tomb Group, the Subashi Ancient Tomb Group, the Yanghai Ancient Tomb Group, etc. The giant rhinoceros fossils in the exhibition hall of giant rhinoceros fossils are the treasures of the Turpan Museum. According to research, this is the only complete giant rhinoceros skeleton fossil unearthed in the world. The exhibition hall of unearthed cultural relics is divided into five cultural units: the Stone Age and the Gushi (Cheshi) period, Gaochang County, Gaochang Kingdom, Xizhou in the Tang Dynasty, and Uighur Gaochang, which collectively reflect the social and historical development process and civilization achievements of the Turpan area.
