Taipei Ximending returns to youth / Recommend three classic old shops with familiar tastes
After my son played basketball on Sunday afternoon, I went to Ximending with my husband and son. ~I remember that more than 20 years ago, my husband and I would go shopping and watch movies here when we had nothing to do. 20 years later, this place has become even more trendy and popular!
certainly! Ximending is not only a trendy mecca, but also hides many time-honored food that has been in business for decades. We ate at the following three classic old shops, which are full of old-fashioned flavors and local human touch:
---
1. Cheng Weizhen Tainan Pasta (50-year-old restaurant)
- A famous late-night snack shop in Ximending, famous for its "Tainan pasta" and "braised food", with thin and chewy noodles and fragrant braised pork. My husband loves wonton meatball and egg drop soup.
- Unpretentious environment, affordable prices (pasta about NT$50)
**🍜Recommended way of eating**: Pasta + mixed braised dishes + wonton soup is the standard for gourmets!
---
2. Yangji Ice Shop (70-year-old ice cream shop)
- Founded in the 1950s, the signature "Corn Ice" is a representative of the old-fashioned taste! Pour canned corn kernels over shaved ice, and the unique sweet and salty taste is so appealing that even Japanese tourists are curious to try it.
- Other recommendations: Peanut ice, red bean milk ice, the ingredients are cooked to be dense and not too sweet.
**🍧Short story**: In the early days when supplies were scarce, corn ice was a creative way of eating in Taiwan after the war, and now it has become a symbol of nostalgia.
---
3. Hongan Tofu Pudding Shop
- The store is low-key and retro, and the tofu pudding adheres to traditional craftsmanship. The taste is dense with soybean fragrance, and the syrup is sweet and not greasy.
- The interior of this store is nostalgic, like walking into an old Taiwanese home, suitable for taking photos and checking in. However, we went to the branch in Ximending, which only had 4 simple outdoor seats. Next door is the famous Tiantianli, which is very crowded. I want to try their braised pork rice and oyster omelette next time.
We originally wanted to go to Lao Tianlu to buy braised duck wings and duck tongues to take home, but the queue was so long that it looked like it would take more than half an hour, so we gave up the idea. Then we went to visit the Red Building.
Ximen Red House
- Built in 1908, the building is an octagonal red brick building that combines Western and Eastern features. It is now a city-designated historic site.
- The bars and shops in Honglou Square have become a popular destination for gay nightlife.
- On weekend nights, there are sometimes drag queen performances and rainbow markets.
However, we are with our son today, so we won’t stay here for long😆
