The Invalides was built by order of Louis XIV in 1670. At that time, the king hoped to provide a place for living and recuperation for soldiers who were injured, old or sick in the war and could not continue to serve, so that they could spend the rest of their lives in a quiet and peaceful environment. The construction of the Invalides was presided over by architect Behar Bruant. The first phase of the project started in March 1671 and was completed in February 1677. The first batch of disabled and old soldiers moved in in 1674. After that, Jules Hardouin Mansard continued to preside over the design and construction, and the entire Invalides project was not officially completed until 1706. Les Invalides is a model of Baroque architectural style, combining symmetry, simplicity and solemnity, and is considered one of the iconic buildings of French classicism. The sculpture decorations on the building highlight the praise of "Sun King" Louis XIV and the distinct military color. Its main axis is the central courtyard and the church extending to the south. It consists of 15 quadrilateral courtyard buildings and 2 churches. The Golden Dome Building is the main building. The dome is 107 meters above the ground and is decorated with complex patterns and statues, all of which are gilded materials. A large number of murals depicting the story of Christ are painted inside the dome. Today, the Invalides still performs the function of housing disabled soldiers as it did when it was first built. It is also the location of military museums, including the French Military Museum. The museum's collection covers French history from ancient times and the Middle Ages to the present, with more than 500,000 pieces. The Invalides is regarded as a symbol of French honor. When each French president takes office, a salute is fired at the Invalides. In addition, the Invalides also hosts various cultural activities and exhibitions. It has become an important cultural exchange venue in Paris.
