Driving six or seven hours back just to see this show was totally worth it. Day 7: Return home with beautiful memories - Morning: Rest briefly in Urumqi, prepare for the return trip. This Ili self-driving trip left many wonderful memories. - Afternoon: Fly back to Beijing, ending this unforgettable journey. The beauty of Nalati: The grassland, cattle and sheep, blue sky, and friends playing Guandan together—everything was just perfect, as if time slowed down. The comfort of Panlong Ancient Road: Driving along Panlong Ancient Road, enjoying the changing scenery and the embrace of the wind, incredibly pleasant. Sunrise at Sailimu Lake: The chase for the sunrise was tense and exciting. Seeing the sunrise made it all worthwhile—a visual feast. The blue of Sailimu Lake: That unique blue, pure and deep, feels like being in a dream, reluctant to leave. Relaxation at Sanqiu Tavern: The band’s performance filled with life’s atmosphere, showing another possibility of life. Communication during the trip: Several late-night talks broke down barriers between people. Sometimes a talkative talker, sometimes a quiet listener. Also celebrated a friend’s birthday on the trip, creating a warm atmosphere. Travel Review Car rental advice: Strongly recommend renting a car in Yining. Driving from Urumqi to Yining takes six to seven hours and is quite exhausting. Taking the overnight train from Urumqi to Yining is a good option, allowing rest and enjoying the scenery along the way. Weather factors: Ili’s weather changes quickly. When the weather is good, the scenery is stunning; when bad, it feels apocalyptic. For example, it rained and was cold on the first day at Kalajun, so not much beauty was seen. After the afternoon cleared, the scenery was completely different. It’s recommended to stay in the city when it rains and go to the grassland when the weather is good. The itinerary should be flexible based on weather. Originally planned to visit Sailimu Lake first then the grassland, but due to bad weather, moved Sailimu Lake to the last day, which proved wise. Planning tips: Xinjiang is vast with many attractions. It’s best to plan ahead, list your must-visit spots, and be flexible with others. After all, the most beautiful scenery is often on the road.

Getting lost in the intricate streets of Tekes' Bagua City isn't always a bad thing. Deep within Bostan Street, I stumbled upon a charming little shop brimming with Xinjiang ethnic flair—Muma's Ice Cream. Unlike typical dessert shops, stepping inside reveals a high arched blue dome, colorful lighting, Uyghur-patterned tablecloths, and carved railings. The walls are adorned with handcrafted hats, woven fabrics, copper pots, and ethnic musical instruments, exuding a strong Central Asian vibe. Every detail feels like walking into a Uyghur home. I ordered the original flavor ice cream, which was rich in milk aroma and had a creamy texture. The shop also offers taro, vanilla, mango, and other flavors, all naturally fragrant and not overly sweet. This is not just ordinary ice cream; it's a fusion of Xinjiang's land and craftsmanship. If you visit Tekes, this scoop is definitely worth the trip. Sitting in the blue ethnic-style seating area, enjoying the ice cream while watching the sunset cast its glow over the streets of Bagua City, I felt myself slow down completely. This is not just a treat for the taste buds but also a visual and cultural journey.

This part of Xinjiang might not be very well-known amongst foreigners but it’s definitely worth visiting. The journey began in Urumqi. We then traveled by car along the Duku Highway which is a famous route. Our first notable stop was at the Nalati Grasslands; they’re especially green and beautiful in the summer. After that we headed to the snow mountain. At all these tourist spots there are horses to ride instead of hiking. The next significant stop was at the Sayram lake. The weather was not very good when we arrived but we stuck around a bit and the rain clouds got blown away by the strong winds and the sun came out. Our last stop was at the Dushanzi Grand Canyon. There were many activities to do there including: crossing a glass bridge suspended over a part of the canyon, cycling over the canyon in a suspended bicycle, visiting the ice world with ice slides and fun activities. One night we also stayed at Bagua city. The urban planning in this city is unique and historical; it’s definitely worth a visit. The whole city has no traffic lights and its design incorporates Chinese philosophy related to balance (yin-yang).
