🇨🇭 My Visit to the Christmas Festival of Lights at Zurich’s ILLUMINARIUM
#festivaljoy #100waysoftravel
Last Christmas, I had the pleasure of experiencing the magical ILLUMINARIUM at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. As the sun set at 5:00 PM, the museum’s courtyard transformed into a winter wonderland of lights, enchanting music, and festive cheer, creating an atmosphere of pure joy and celebration.
The moment I stepped into the courtyard, I was greeted by an awe-inspiring sea of lights that draped the architecture in vibrant hues. The light installations were not just visually stunning; they were crafted to tell stories and evoke the festive spirit, accompanied by the soft melodies of mythical creatures that seemed to wander through the crowd. It felt as though every light and note had been designed to transport us into a fairy tale.
The aroma of mulled wine and glowing cotton candy filled the air, mingling with the sounds of laughter and conversation. The festival catered wonderfully to all senses, with culinary delights available throughout the evening. I indulged in some winter snacks and later, warmed up with a delicious fondue dinner that I had booked online, which proved to be a cozy and delightful experience.
The ILLUMINARIUM was more than just a light show; it was a communal gathering that brought together residents and tourists, all ending their day with a touch of magic. It was fascinating to see how the historical setting of the National Museum could transform into such a vibrant hub of contemporary festivity.
This event was a highlight of my holiday season, offering not just a spectacular light display but a space to make lasting memories with friends and family. The Christmas Festival of Lights at Zurich’s ILLUMINARIUM truly captured the essence of the season, combining tradition with innovative celebration, and I look forward to what the next season will bring.

What to do on a rainy day in Zurich?
Raining rain go away, come again another day 🎶
With limited activities to do on a rainy day, I decided to visit the Swiss National Museum, Zurich (adult ticket price: 13 CHF).
The museum holds a wide variety of unique artifacts that reflects the Swiss history. On the day I visited, I went to the permanent exhibition to get an insight of Switzerland’s history and archeological findings across the country. At the same time, the limited exhibition called Colonial presented Switzerland’s role and its global entanglements during the colonial period.
Overall, if you enjoy learning about history, this is a must visit attraction to add into your Zurich travel plan. 😃#traveldiaries #2024 #historicallandmarks #switzerland #zurich

Swiss National Museum Zurich 🗺️

A riveting history of Switzerland at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, just recently. 🏰🕰️ The CHF 10 entrance fee was a bargain for the enriching cultural experience that one got. #SwissHeritage #ZurichMuseumAdventure
The museum, located in a castle-like building is an artifact and exhibit collection that has been accumulated since centuries. The interactive displays are very much alive – from the medieval weaponry to traditional crafts, each section paints a story about Switzerland. 🏹🎭
The Helmhaus, an art gallery in close proximity to the historical path is a welcome addition. The modern art displays contrast the museum’s medieval appeal. 🎨🏰
The courtyard of the Swiss National Museum is a secret gem. The beautiful gardens and the castle’s architecture provide an oasis of tranquility in a city center. Ideal for a time of reflection. 🌳🏰
After the museum, take a walk along Limmat River towards Lindenhof hill. The views of the old town and river are beautiful from this point, which makes it a pleasant place to explore further. 🚶♂️🌇
The museum’s cafe Café National is a nice place to stop for coffee. The outdoor terrace is ideal for sipping in the castle ambience and having some Swiss treats. ☕🍰
Both history enthusiasts and those who are simply interested in Swiss culture should visit the Swiss National Museum. It is the cultural center of Zurich because it has an affordable entrance fee, varied exhibitions and nearby attractions. #SwissHistory #ZurichCulturalJourney

Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum)
To get to know a country, I’d say it’s always best to start with the national museum. They offer a good impression of the heritage and history behind its people. And the Landesmuseum doesn’t let down. It offers a good perspective of Switzerland as a whole, from history to culture the expositions tell the stories of the Swiss. You might think Switzerland was well off since forever, but that’d be a wrong assumption. The Swiss were the “Poor man of Europe” for many years in the past. It wasn’t till WWII that the Swiss emerged as a prosperous nation.
