Did a hike from Pak Kung Au to Sunset Peak to Mui Wo village. The starting ascent was pretty tough considering my current fitness levels. Steps and more steps. Although it’s just a 500m vertical elevation of climb over ~2.5k. This took about an hour with short breaks. The mid section was much easier and pretty nice to hike, but the views were obstructed but the foggy and overcast weather.
Mui Wo was a quaint little village, something different to the bustling city of Hong Kong.

Hiking in Sunset Peak
Located south of Lantau Island, Sunset Peak is the third highest mountain in Hong Kong at 869 metres above sea level. In recent years, many photographers have taken pictures on the mountain, and the mountain under the lens is covered with golden miscanthus, attracting a large number of climbers, especially young people to go up the mountain to see its scenery.
Our journey was mainly photography and climbing secondary, so I chose the section from Bogong Pass to Lantou Ying to turn back and forth, because of its short distance and can cover most of the beautiful scenery. However, the physical strength of our colleagues and friends was quite different, and there were many climbers, so we ended up spending a total of 2 hours going up the mountain and more than 1 hour descending. Readers with better physical strength believe that it can be completed in a shorter time.
Although Sunset Peak has a certain height, the road section is paved with complete steps, which is still relatively easy. Take advantage of autumn and winter to climb or shoot with friends here, which is a lot of fun. Climbers can take buses 11, 23 and 3M from Tung Chung Bus Terminal and have the driver stop at Pak Kung Pass. If the number of people permitting, you can also take a taxi from Lantau Island to Pak Kung Pass at Tung Chung MTR Station Exit D.

Sunset Peak 🌅🏔
I have hiked sunset peak twice in the last two months; one time it was very cold (7ºc) and the other time it was cold (15ºc) and wet (raining near the peak). Nonetheless, both times were very enjoyable.
I love starting from Nam Shan Campsite, and hiking up to Sunset Peak, via Yi Tung Shan, and through all of the huts which are built just below Sunset Peak.
Then, we finish with the descent to Pak Kung Au, total of 6.6 to 7.3 km (not sure with the GPS…).
You could continue and hike up to Lantau Peak (another challenging hike, but very rewarding with amazing scenery!!)

Lantau Island: Sunset Peak - Climb Hong Kong's Third Highest Mountain and Explore the Mysterious Stone Houses.
There are many hiking trails on Lantau Island, making it a great destination for spring outings. This time, I climbed Hong Kong's third highest peak, the 869-meter tall Sunset Peak, and then headed to Mui Wo.
Many online hiking guides suggest that Sunset Peak is suitable for beginners, but I feel that many of them underestimate the difficulty of Sunset Peak. The scenery along the trail is indeed beautiful, inspiring awe. Walking through it, with the gentle mountain breeze, one feels a serene sense of returning to nature. However, there are many stairs and they are quite steep. Reaching the summit is not so easy and one must proceed according to their ability.
As you approach the summit, you see a spread of small stone houses on the hillside. These stone houses, known as 'Lantau Mountain Camp,' were built in the 1920s as holiday cottages for missionaries. From the hillside, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the grasslands and feel the mysterious charm of Sunset Peak.
Location: Sunset Peak
How to get there: From the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus outside Exit B of the MTR Tung Chung Station, take bus no. 3M, 11, 11A, or 23 to the highest point on Tung Chung Road, Pak Kung Au.
How to return: From Mui Wo, take a ferry to Central, or take bus no. 3M from the Mui Wo Bus Terminus back to Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus.

Lantau Peak: Amidst the sea of silvergrass, quietly await the sunset glow
Lantau Peak is the third highest mountain in Hong Kong, attracting hikers from all walks of life to visit. In addition to enjoying the beautiful scenery and wild plants along the way, you can also personally experience the gentleness of the silvergrass that blankets the hills beneath your feet.
First Stop: Pak Kung Au
The journey begins at Pak Kung Au, located between Phoenix Mountain and Lantau Peak. Here, you can first take in the distant views of Tung Chung to the north and Cheung Sha to the south. Then, follow the Phoenix Trail up to Lantau Peak. This two-kilometer uphill path is the only ascent on the trip, challenging your stamina. Although it may be tough, most of the path is shaded by trees until the large trees are gradually replaced by shrubs and the view opens up, indicating that you are approaching the highest point of this section.
Second Stop: Lantau Peak
At Lantau Peak, the magnificent views of bays and beaches are unobstructed. The silvergrass growing along the mountain path sways in the wind, a famous sight of the Lantau highlands.
Third Stop: Lan Tau Camp
Upon reaching the peak, a gentle breeze blows as you pause here for a moment to gaze at the little stone houses scattered among the mountains. At dusk, this is an excellent spot for taking beautiful Instagram photos.
Fourth Stop: Sunset Peak
Continue forward, passing by old mountain cottages, and then bypass the northern foothills of Sunset Peak, known as the ninth highest mountain in Hong Kong.
Fifth Stop: Luk Tei Tong Watch Tower
After crossing the vast picnic area of South Mountain, turn left into the ancient trail. Soon, you will see the historical site built in the early 20th century—the Luk Tei Tong Watch Tower.
Sixth Stop: Mui Wo Ferry Pier
Walk along the country path for about 15 minutes, and you will arrive at the center of Mui Wo.

Ascending the Misty Trails to Sunset Peak
#trekking #hongkong Discover one of Hong Kong's most rewarding hiking experiences as you ascend Sunset Peak (大東山), the third-highest peak in Hong Kong. Rising to a lofty elevation of 869 meters, Sunset Peak promises panoramic vistas, invigorating trails, and a dramatic weather tableau that combine to make this trek a must for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
To begin your journey from Hung Hom Station, take the MTR towards Lantau Island. Transfer to the Tung Chung Line and alight at Tung Chung Station. From there, board bus 3M or 11 towards Tung Chung Town Centre and disembark at Pak Kung Au. The trailhead to Sunset Peak rests a few steps away from the bus stop, marking the start of your adventure through Hong Kong's verdant landscapes.
The trek to the peak is a test of endurance and spirit but promises unsurpassed joys upon reaching the crest. Spanning a distance of approximately 6-7 km one way, the hike could typically take around 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and fitness level. Along the way, you'll navigate through well-maintained paths punctuated by wooden steps, rugged trails, and lush shrubbery that tell stories of the peak's rich biodiversity.
The weather at Sunset Peak can shift rapidly from sunny blue skies to cool winds and mystical fog, adding a touch of unpredictability to the journey. It's wise to prepare for a variety of conditions—dress in layers, and do not forget to carry a waterproof jacket, as the higher elevations could surprise you with sporadic rain showers or dense mist.
Once at the summit, hikers are often treated to a breathtaking sight, especially during sunset hours, earning the peak its name. The change from day to dusk heralds a drop in temperature and the magical transformation of the sky into a tapestry of warm hues.
The descent, while easier on the lungs, still demands caution due to the potentially slippery path from the ever-changing weather. Despite the challenge, hikers are often found to be reluctant when leaving, already nostalgic for the sublime tranquility of the peak's soothing embrace and the pure exhilaration that comes with conquering one of Hong Kong's most luminous treasures.
Remember to bring ample water, snacks for energy, and don't rush the experience—Sunset Peak is not just a trek but a symphony of nature's marvels best savored one step at a time.

Ah~ It’s the season of Miscanthus🌾🌾
After climbing Dadong Mountain, I finally realized that it is easier to go up the mountain than to go down.
Because the slope of Dadong Mountain is relatively sloping and the stairs are high, it was okay to climb up. My legs were shaking when I walked back [laughing and crying R]
Newbies should be careful when climbing [Shy R]
Transportation method:
Take the MTR to Tung Chung, then transfer to bus 11/3M, get off at Pak Kung Au, go straight, turn left and go up the stairs to Tai Tung Shan [Party R]

The beauty of Lantau Island (Tai Tung Shan)
The mountains and plains are covered with dazzling golden colors. Every autumn and winter, it is the time to appreciate miscanthus in Dadong Mountain.
Sunset Peak is the third highest mountain in Hong Kong. It is located east of Phoenix Mountain and west of Ertung Mountain on Lantau Island. It is separated from Phoenix Mountain by Pok Kung Au.
Tai Tung Shan is the third highest peak in Hong Kong. It is not a beginner’s route. If you follow what others say and rush up the mountain, accidents may easily occur. The following are some instructions for climbing Dadong Mountain to see miscanthus. I hope everyone will make sufficient preparations before setting off and enjoy the fun of hiking in the mountains.
There are three main routes to climb Dadong Mountain, each with its own difficulty and difficulty. They are:
Go up the mountain along Fenghuang Trail from Bo Gong Au (easier),
Climb up the mountain along the Phoenix Trail from Nanshan (more strenuous),
From Tung Chung, follow the Wong Lung Hang Country Trail up the mountain (more strenuous).
