Sunpu Castle is known as the castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his later years. It is now maintained as "Sunpu Castle Park" and is attractive for its beautiful stone walls, turrets, and spacious lawns. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom in full bloom, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. You can visit the inside of the Higashi-mikomon Gate and the Tatsumi Turret, and there are also many exhibits that give you a sense of history. Sunpu Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in his prime and used as his retirement home in his later years. The ruins of Sunpu Castle have been developed into a park, so I took a stroll there. There is a statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu in the park, and the 100 Great Castles of Japan are worth seeing. Excavations are currently being carried out, so you can see the stone walls from 400 years ago. There is no castle tower, but there is a magnificent gate, stone walls, and moat. It is very large, so make sure you have plenty of time to visit. The experience at the teagarden was the best! There’s also a tea ceremony place inside, but we didn’t go in. It’s only a small park, but there’s many areas with a different look and feel inside. A must do in Shizuoka!
