No.19 of Best Things to Do in Fukuoka
Historic buildings
This shrine is dedicated to the gods of Sokotsutsuo-no-kami, Nakatsutsuo-no-kami and Uwatsutsuo-no-kami and it was officially designated in ancient time as one of the high ranked shrines. It was once admired as the greatest shrine of Chikuzen area (northern part of the present Fukuoka prefecture). The surrounding area was originally a cape at the mouth of Nakagawa River flowing into Hakata Bay. It was worshipped as a tutelary shrine of navigation. The gods were also worshipped as gods of Japanese poem (waka) and ancient famous poet Sogi visited this shrine to pay respect to the god. The straight shaped roof of the main hall of this shrine is one of the specific features of ancient architectural style, very contrastive to the later Buddhist style. The main hall is designated as a national treasure and the copper axe and sword of the shrine are designated as important cultural properties of the prefecture.

🇯🇵 Fukuoka Hakata Sumiyoshi Shrine Experience the charm of the Japanese New Year🎍
Sumiyoshi Shrine
Address: 3-1-51 Sumiyoshi, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City
Features - The night is really beautiful. I went to the shrine during the New Year. There were people coming and going, and the vendors were constantly attracting customers. I felt the importance that the Japanese attach to the New Year. I also tried the food from different vendors, such as takoyaki, chopsticks-yaki, etc. The chopsticks-yaki with Mentaiko is full of Fukuoka style. Everyone must try it.

Sumiyoshi Shrine Old Castle History
Sumiyoshi Taisha (Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine) predates the arrival of Buddhism in Japan and along with Izumo Taisha (taisha-zukuri) and the Ise Jingu (shinmei-zukuri) has its own style of architecture known as sumiyoshi zukuri, free of mainland Asian influences. The oldest buildings at Sumiyoshi Taisha date from 1810 and are painted in a dark red color. The roofs are straight (rather than curved in later styles) and made of thatch. Other features of sumiyoshi zukuri are the okichigi forked finials on the roof of the honden or main shrine and the five square billets (katsuogi) placed horizontally along the roof. The building is surrounded by a wooden fence or tamagaki. Other notable structures include a kagura hall, an arched bridge over a scenic pond known as Taiko bashi or Sorihashi, said to have been originally given to the shrine by Yodogimi, the lover of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and over 700 stone lanterns donated by seafarers and companies related to marine transport. In the Heian Period, Sumiyoshi Taisha was the recipient of imperial favor and patronage. It was from nearby Suminoe no Tsu that imperial embassies to China set sail and were joined on their voyages by the head priests of the shrine. Sumiyoshi Taisha is now a popular place for traditional Shinto marriage ceremonies and draws huge crowds of Osakans for the New Year hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year). There are hundreds of other Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan dedicated to the us who protect sailors, fishermen and those traveling on the sea.

One of the
One of the more popular Shrines in Fukuoka City is Sumiyoshi Shrine which is located within a 1 km radius of Hakata Station. Realistically a very close and conveniently located Urban site and quite remarkable that such a quiet and open area can be situated so close to a major Train Station. You are enclosed in such a nature filled area that you could be confused that you are in the countryside and not a large metropolitan city, such as Fukuoka

Walking into the sacred tranquility and ancient prayers.
Fukuoka Sumiyoshi Shrine seems like a point where time stands still, perfectly separating modern hustle and ancient peace. The moment you step into the shrine, dappled shadows of trees, ancient wooden pillars, and offering lanterns create a harmonious picture. This shrine, with its unique Sumiyoshi-zukuri architectural style, showcases the elegance and majesty of traditional Japanese shrines. Every year, countless believers and tourists come here to pray for peace and happiness. Walking through the grand torii gate into the shrine, the fresh air and quiet atmosphere bring a sense of peace, as if the world's troubles disappear here. In this shrine, every statue, every stone step holds a long history and profound culture, making it one of the most spiritual and traditionally charming sacred places in Fukuoka.

In the shade of ancient trees, the tranquil moments of the land of wishes.
Stepping into Fukuoka's Sumiyoshi Shrine feels like being separated from the bustling city, with an atmosphere of peace and serenity greeting you. The grand torii gate stands amidst the ancient trees, seemingly guarding this sacred place of millennia-old faith. As you follow the stone steps upward, sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows, while a gentle breeze carries the faint scent of wood and a serene aura.
The main hall is renowned for its simple and elegant Sumiyoshi-zukuri architectural style, with red and white eaves beautifully contrasting against the lush green backdrop. I sincerely offered a votive, silently making a wish as the light sound of bells resonated, feeling a sense of inner peace and tranquility. The clear water pond and stone lanterns within the shrine add a touch of elegance and poetic charm to the entire space.
Occasionally, the sound of drums and music can be heard from afar, a rehearsal for traditional festivals. Strolling along the quiet paths behind the shrine, time seems to slow down here. As the sunset paints the sky red, I left with blessings and hope in my heart, deeply impressed by Sumiyoshi Shrine.

Sumiyoshi Shrine, a recommended place to visit in Fukuoka!!🩷
Sumiyoshi Shrine is a 10-minute walk from Fukuoka Hakata Station, so it's nice to stop by for a bit~👍
Unlike Korea, Sumiyoshi Shrine is full of red wood, so it was intense and fresh, but it was a quiet and calm atmosphere, just like a shrine, so it was a place that made my heart feel at ease^^🍀🍀
🌳 A shrine that matches with the green trees🌳
I recommend going at least once!!^^🤗🤗

💞Reason for recommendation: The oldest shrine in Hakata, Sumiyoshi Shrine❤️ The shrine is not large but there are quite a lot of attractions to visit, there is a Chibon Torii⛩️, super beautiful photographed, vermilion connected into a piece😍
There are also very special statues, and prominent style shrine architecture, here many tourists will pray for education and good fortune, and can buy the seal, in addition, the view is quite good, great for a walk 🌹

⭐️Sumiyoshi Shrine⭐️ 住吉神社 is a shrine located not far from downtown Fukuoka. Although it is a fairly large shrine, you can quickly circle it. Whether it is a weekend or a public holiday, it is always crowded with worshippers and tourists, so it is a good place to take your time and look around.

Fukuoka Sumiyoshi Shrine is one of the three major Sumiyoshi Shrines and is considered the progenitor of the 2,000 Sumiyoshi Shrines throughout Japan. It enshrines the gods who remove misfortune and bring good luck, as well as the gods who protect the safety of sailors. There were tourists, but there were also quite a few locals praying.

Sumiyoshi Jinja
#fukuokatrip Very peaceful shrine, even thought I went to the wrong place at first because there was no one. Good place to give your prayers and clear your mind. In between Tenjin and Hakata but it’s walkable.A small shrine that is nice to visit and relax in on your way to wherever you are going. No need to go out of your way to see it though, because there's not really much to see. But if you are in the area might as well pass by!

Sumiyoshi Jinja
#fukuokatrip Quiet temple for you to visit. Not many tourists visit here because of its small size, so it does not get crowded one bit. Nice to see the simplicity of the location. There are times when wedding ceremonies take place here or a prayer service. Please be respectful here by not talking loud or taking pictures of their holy places. If you come here, enjoy the tranquility.

Sacred Serenity: Sumiyoshi's Embrace Beckons
#2024wish
Embarking on an unforgettable journey to Sumiyoshi Jinja in Fukuoka, Japan, revealed the serene beauty of this ancient Shinto shrine nestled in Sumiyoshi, Hakata Ward. Surrounded by vibrant nature and traditional architecture, the shrine is a symbol of maritime safety and family well-being. The air filled with the sweet scent of incense as locals fervently prayed for prosperity, making it particularly significant during the Japanese New Year. Witnessing the ritual of Hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year, highlighted the deep cultural ties. The tranquil ambiance and the warmth of the community left an indelible mark on my soul. In 2024, I wish to go there again, seeking blessings amid the timeless charm of Sumiyoshi Jinja.
