Edinburgh became a must-see destination for me in 2011 after watching "One Day." Before going, I thought it would be an abstract pursuit of the film's theme of "cherishing first encounters." But in reality, what truly captivated me about this city was its ability to retain a touch of tenderness and romance despite its weathered history. Edinburgh was my first stop in Scotland. I took an overnight train from London and woke up in Edinburgh the next morning. Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, located at either end of the Royal Mile, are well worth visiting. The former is a military fortress, a testament to Edinburgh's history. The latter is the Queen's holiday palace, boasting a luxurious interior. St. Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile is also a classic, notable for its crown-shaped spire, modeled after the Scottish crown, and the stained-glass windows within. Victoria Street awakens childhood fairy tale dreams, drawing countless Harry Potter fans to The Elephant House, seeking traces of J.K. Rowling. However, I was drawn to the street's vintage charm, which evoked a sense of stepping back in time, into a movie scene. After exploring Edinburgh, I realized my fondness for the city wasn't rooted in the regrets portrayed in "One Day," but rather in its enduring romanticism that resonated deeply within me. ☀️Practical Tips☀️ 1️⃣ Standard overnight train tickets cost between GBP 16–30 and should be booked in advance. However, if the train isn't crowded, you can stretch out across three empty seats. I did just that on my trip to the UK. 2️⃣ The overnight train journey takes about 4.5 hrs. 3️⃣ It's best to stay in Edinburgh's Old Town. My accommodation, a B&B, was in the Old Town and cost around GBP 40–50 per night.

#2024mapped Being the last stop of UK trip, for a moment I thought it would not be too impressive. No, it’s arguably the prettiest city I have ever made to, and don’t think I could ever have enough. I had only a day in this city that I would have chosen to spend many more days in given a second choice. These are the places I went and enjoyed: 1) Calton Hill - such a wonderful high ground to have the panoramic perspective of the city, with barely any effort 2) Edinburgh Palace - being the icon of the city, it might not be the most photogenic when shot from near. I personally enjoyed the viewpoint from the southeast and northwest (because there were more interesting foreground to take a photo of the palace). 3. St Giles Cathedral 4. Arthur Seat - another popular place to enjoy the skyline of the ancient city. But when I was there, it was raining badly so I couldn’t tell how pretty it usually is. My guess is if not for the natural beauty/experience of hiking or the historical value of the place, Calton Hill has a higher “energy”-performance ratio. But really, the entire city is a living antique. Every corner is a good photo opportunity.

St. Giles' Cathedral is located on the Royal Mile in the Old Town of Edinburgh. It was built in 1124 and will celebrate its 900th anniversary in 2024. Its unique features include the Scottish crown on the top of the cathedral and the interior is full of quite delicate stained glass. The church is currently undergoing partial renovation, and part of the ceiling has been changed to a blue background, white with gold lines and gold patterns. If the entire ceiling was replaced with a new color, the style would be very different! Personally, I think St. Giles' Cathedral is one of the attractions worth visiting in Edinburgh. The church itself is free to enter. If you have time when passing by, I highly recommend visiting it. Likely founded in the 12th century and dedicated to Saint Giles, the church was elevated to collegiate status by Pope Paul II in 1467.

St Giles' Cathedral is one of my bucket lists when I visited Scotland. The entrance is free and welcome the donation. It has very beautiful stained glass gothic cathedral and featuring touching bible stories. The cofin of Queen Elizabeth II had the lying in rest at this cathedral to let public to say goodbye and paid respect to their beloved Queen.

Day 2: Morning visit to the V&A Museum (free, opens at 10 AM), afternoon at Westminster Abbey (book appointment on the official website), Big Ben, London Eye, and a walk along the Thames River to Borough Market before returning (a very exhausting day). Day 3: British Museum (free, book on the official website, opens at 10 AM, arrived at the back entrance at 9:25 AM with almost no queue), followed by fish and chips, Covent Garden, National Gallery (free, no appointment needed), Trafalgar Square, Chinatown. Day 4: Buckingham Palace, St. James's Park, Harry Potter Studio Tour, Harrods. Day 5: Oxford Street Liberty, Selfridges, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Regent's Park (missed the group tour to White Cliffs, so just wandered around). Day 6: Paddington to Oxford, afternoon at Blenheim Palace (check for ticket deals on Xianyu). Day 7: Bicester shopping, rest day. Day 8: Shared car tour to Cotswolds with three young ladies, very pleasant, lots of walking and photo-taking, not tiring at all. Previously visited Biei, Japan, and found similarities between the two places. British gardening skills are impressive, with every household having various flowers and unique small houses. Day 9: Christ Church College (Harry Potter filming location), Radcliffe Camera, Bridge of Sighs, Trinity College, Natural History Museum, dinner at a Turkish BBQ restaurant surrounded by Chinese restaurants. Day 10: Transition to Edinburgh, absolutely stunning! Edinburgh's weather is unpredictable, sunny and rainy. Arrived around 4 PM, dropped off luggage, and climbed Calton Hill. Edinburgh is beautiful! Medieval architecture and the distant sea complement each other, with seagulls adding romance to the city. Day 11: Edinburgh's attractions are compact, mostly walkable. From Waverley Bridge to Princes Street Gardens, Scottish National Gallery, New College, Edinburgh Castle, lunch with mussels, then Victoria Street, Rowling's handprints, St Giles' Cathedral, Elephant House Café, Greyfriars Bobby, National Museum of Scotland, and a trip to the seaside! Saw a beautiful rainbow 🌈. Another day of intense walking. Day 12: Start of a three-day tour of the Scottish Highlands, departing from Edinburgh to Loch Lomond, Glencoe (007 Skyfall filming location), Three Sisters Mountains, Harry Potter train filming location, overnight in Fort William. Day 13: Main itinerary is entering the Isle of Skye: Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, Old Man of Storr, Lealt Falls, Kilt Rock, Quiraing. Day 14: Return trip, visited a whisky distillery, St Andrews (where William and Kate met), Forth Rail Bridge (featured in Jay Chou's MV "Ming Ming Jiu"). Day 15: Finally heading home! Stocked up on souvenirs!

Lovely atmosphere and the stone wall of the church provided a great acoustics. What talented individuals and enjoyed listening to some familiar tunes including Vivaldi’s four seasons. We also had a peak around the interiors. So beautiful and felt special being there in the evening.
