DAY 56: Today we will take the ferry from Takamatsu Port to Shodoshima! There are three ways to get to Shodoshima from Takamatsu Port: The first is to take the [Shodoshima. [Kobe direction] Ferry, docked at Sakate Port, sailing time 70 minutes, ticket price ¥700. The second option is to take a fast boat, which stops at Tonosho Port and takes 45 minutes to sail. The ticket price is ¥1,400 (only passengers can be transported). The third option is to take the Shodoshima ferry, which stops at Tonosho Port. The sailing time is 60 minutes and the ticket price is ¥700. Considering that I was going with a bicycle and the Japanese inn I was staying at was near Tonosho Port, I chose the third option. After setting sail from Takamatsu Port, I passed Megijima, Ogijima, Oshima and Teshima along the waterway. These are all inhabited islands. I arrived at Shodoshima around noon. After storing my luggage at the hotel, I started my bicycle trip. I first went to the largest shopping mall on the island for lunch, then circled the area below the Tobu Strait and visited various attractions. What surprised me most was that the stone walls of Osaka Castle were produced in Shodoshima, and there were still traces of stone cutting fields in many places on the island. The other one was It is a heavy rock hiking trail. At the end of this trail is a huge boulder standing there. Of course, as the Japanese believe in the gods of heaven and earth, there must be a shrine! In fact, it is a bit like the wind-moving rocks commonly seen in various places in Taiwan. However, the scenery here is first-class. From time to time, you can see the transport boats passing by between Takamatsu and Shodoshima. Finally, I rode a circle and returned to Tonosho Port. It is a daimyo garden from the Edo period. Among the gardens designated as special places of scenic beauty in Japan, Ritsurin Garden is the largest. With the lush green Mount Shiun as a backdrop, the garden is cleverly designed with six ponds, 13 artificial hills, and a large number of pine trees pruned into various shapes. *️⃣ Shodoshima is located in the northeast of Shikoku, between Shikoku and Honshu. It is the second largest island among the 3,000 islands in the Seto Inland Sea and a popular holiday destination. The island is famous for Kankakei, one of the three most beautiful valleys in Japan, Olive Park, and Angel Road. *️⃣ Naoshima, located in the Seto Inland Sea of Shikoku, is known as the most artistic island. It is home to Tadao Ando's Benesse House, Chichu Art Museum, Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin, Naoshima Violin, Naoshima Bath, Lee Ufan Museum, and more. In addition to art museums, there is the Art House Project, which involves renovating and redesigning local residents' houses. There are also many free art installations on the island, the most famous of which is Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin by the sea, a pumpkin embracing the end of the world.

This summer, I went on my first trip to Shodoshima and discovered many hidden shops that are unique to Shodoshima. Here are four of my favorites! 1️⃣Nature & Stunning Views Shodoshima is a great spot to enjoy the calm sea of ​​the Setouchi Inland Sea. The beautiful sea and green mountains are overflowing, and the nature that you can't usually touch is soothing to the soul. 2️⃣Art in the City As it is also known as the stage for the Setouchi Triennale, one of the charms of Shodoshima is that art is hidden all over the city. I also found some unusual art, such as egg and olive pompadours😆 3️⃣A cute Dutch cafe🇳🇱 "Dutch Café Cupid & Cotton" is a cafe where you can enjoy authentic Dutch cuisine. The specialty is the Dutch dish pannekoek. The inside of the windmill-like building has a warm and homely atmosphere. Apparently, the building was built by a Dutchman who fell in love with Shodoshima! I had a Pannekoek lunch, which was more voluminous than I expected, and the dough was chewy. It was slightly sweet and matched well with the mushrooms and basil, and it was very delicious! You can see the sea from the window, and it is a cozy and lovely cafe. 4️⃣ Exquisite gelato on the island "Saint-Cancion" is a wonderful gelateria run by a married couple. There are various seasonal flavors available, and I chose mango & passion fruit and strawberry milk. Both turned out to be great choices! The strawberry milk in particular was full of strawberry flavor and was the best. The goods sold in the store were also cute. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Shodoshima even in one day. My trip to Takamatsu and Shodoshima was inspired by the animated film "Kiki's Delivery Service"! Winter is the off-season for tourism on Shodoshima. Visiting Shodoshima during this time allows you to avoid the crowds, especially at Angel Road, where you can take photos without the hustle and bustle of people! 🌟 Highlights: Shodoshima is beautiful, with blue skies, white clouds, beaches, and a seamless blend of sea and sky, making it perfect for a leisurely trip. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side the day we visited ☔️. Shodoshima is not very big, and there aren't many attractions, so half a day is enough. The main attractions are 👇🏻 ① Angel Road: A road that appears only twice a day during low tide, connecting to a small island on the other side. ② Olive Park: The windmill from the animated film "Kiki's Delivery Service" is located here. Borrow a broomstick and you can have your own magical experience. 🔹 My Shodoshima Half-day Tour Guide: 1️⃣ Take the 11:35 am ferry for about an hour ➡️ Shodoshima Tonosho Port, and take the 4:30 pm ferry back to Takamatsu Port. There is a udon noodle shop on the ferry, so we conveniently had lunch on the boat. 2️⃣ Arrive at Tonosho Port at 12:35 pm, take the S Wrench Line bus to Tonosho Honmachi to see Angel Road. 3️⃣ Take the S Wrench Line to Olive Park Station, visit Olive Park and the "Kiki's Delivery Service" photo spot. 4️⃣ Take the S Wrench Line back to Tonosho Port to catch the 4:30 pm ferry back to Takamatsu Port, arriving at 3:30 pm. 📌 Tips: 1️⃣ Angel Road is affected by tides, so check the tide schedule online in advance to avoid missing the road. 2️⃣ The bus intervals are long, so be sure to plan your time carefully. Missing one bus means waiting for 45 minutes.

Shodoshima is an island that floats in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture. Another attraction on Shodoshima is Angel Road. It is a mysterious marine phenomenon called a "tombolo," in which a road appears between the land and the island due to the ebb and flow of the tides. There is a superstition that if a couple crosses this road holding hands, they will be happy, so it is also famous as a sacred place for lovers. By the way, the Bell of Happiness is also located at the observation deck. When visiting Angel Road, be sure to check the low tide times in advance!
