Here’s the route I followed and everything I wish I knew before I went! 🚩 Sightseeing Route I started at the Colosseum early in the morning (before the crowds), then wandered through the Roman Forum and up to Palatine Hill — you can actually feel the history there. After that, I walked to the Pantheon, grabbed a quick coffee, and finished the day watching the sunset from the Spanish Steps. Perfect mix of ancient ruins and buzzing piazzas. 🏖️ Must-Visit Attractions • Colosseum: It’s so much bigger and more impressive in real life. • Vatican Museums: Even if you’re not super into art, the Sistine Chapel will leave you speechless. • Trevi Fountain: I went at night — so much more magical without the daytime crowds. • Trastevere: This neighbourhood stole my heart — colourful streets, tiny restaurants, and the best pasta I had all trip. 🚇 Transportation The metro was super easy to figure out. Though there's nothing Spanish about it, the Spanish steps is one of the most busy and visited attraction in Rome. It was crowded when I was there and the steps are not difficult to climb all the way up. Once at the top, you have the most pretty views of the city of Rome. The Spanish Steps got their name because in the 17th century, the Spanish embassy was situated at the bottom of the stairs, in the area known as "Piazza di Spagna." Spanish steps is consequently not the official name but Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti. The "Fontana della Barcaccia" fountain, designed by Pietro Bernini, the renowned Gian Lorenzo Bernini's father, is also located on this Piazza di Spagna. Spanish Steps is a staircase that connects the Piazza di Spagna to Trinità dei Monti (16th-century church). Even though there is "Spanish" in its name, the Steps is actually funded by French money. It was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi and has featured prominently in many movies. Before the new municipal rules introduced in 2019, this was where people were usually sitting and hanging out. It was also common to see Romans having lunch here. Nowadays, if you were caught sitting on the steps, police officers stationed there would usually blow their whistle and wave their hands to signal that sitting is off-limits. We were in Italy in July 2022. We were in Rome for 5 days. We visited this land mark many times as it was on way to many other attractions in Rome. At the bottom of Spanish Steps is beautiful Piazza Di Sapgna. View from top of steps is beautiful. We climbed down these steps rather than climbing up in a hot day. I couldn't decide because there were so many restaurants, so I asked the hotel for recommendations and they made a reservation for me! That's the best way to do it! Visiting the Spanish Steps in Rome was like stepping into a movie scene. I arrived late afternoon, and the soft sunlight cast a golden glow over the wide marble staircase, making everything feel beautifully cinematic. Despite the crowd, it didn’t feel overwhelming — in fact, it added to the charm and buzz of the area. I found a quiet spot halfway up the steps to sit and people-watch. Tourists, street performers, and couples enjoying gelato made it feel lively yet relaxed. The view from the top overlooking Piazza di Spagna is definitely worth the climb. Right at the base is the famous Barcaccia Fountain, quietly bubbling under the steps. Though you’re not allowed to sit long on the steps now (due to city rules), it’s still a must-visit when in Rome. #Rome We managed to squeeze in 50,000 steps in 35°C heat, and while it was tough, it was also one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had! Also loved meeting a fellow EDTer from this group .. always so nice to connect while travelling! 👋🏼 ✈️ Flew out Tuesday morning from Manchester to Ciampino Airport .. it’s small and super easy to navigate & back in Wednesday evening. 🚎 From the airport, we got the bus (Stand 6) and then took the metro .. only €7 to Roma Termini. **Taxis from Ciampino are a flat €40 to anywhere in the city if you prefer that route. 🏨 We booked Hotel The Colosseum .. great location, a short walk from Roma Termini, the Colosseum, and Santa Maria Maggiore (one of the four major basilicas in Rome) .. Bonus the hotel has a lovely rooftop bar with gorgeous views, was perfect after a long day of walking. 🍕 We had lunch right in front of the Colosseum (can’t remember the restaurant name, but the pizza was unreal) .. It’s also where we met Eric, our Vespa tour guide. 🛵 We pre-booked a 2-hour Vespa tour with a company called “Rome Vespa Tour”HIGHLY recommend it! 🛵It was a personal tour of all the major landmarks, with time to stop and take pictures. We even went to the highest point in Rome (the views 😍)then finished by crossing into the Vatican City 🇻🇦 🩵We felt like we’re in a movie .. the breeze, the views, the city … magical ✨ ⛲️After we took a beautiful stroll, starting with the Trevi Fountain, which looked stunning at night, enjoyed a lovely meal nearby before heading over to the Spanish Steps (which were closed off due to filming for Squid Game! 🎬) 🩵On our walk back to the hotel, we passed by so many incredible landmarks .. Rome truly feels like an open-air museum at every turn. ⛪ The next morning, we were up early to make the most of our time .. starting with a walk through the Holy Door, which is only opened during Jubilee Years that occur every 25 years! 🇻🇦Next stop .. Vatican City, where we visited the stunning St. Peter’s Basilica and wandered through the St. Peter’s Square. It was truly breathtaking & easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. And we were incredibly lucky to see the Pope during his Wednesday morning Mass! 🙏🏼✨ 📍Places we visited, the Colosseum,The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Orange garden,Spanish steps, San Martino Monti,Angel Bridge,Arch of Titus, Victor Emmanuel ii Monument,St. Peter’s Square,Trinità dei Monti,Vittoriano & many more. 📝 You can walk nearly everywhere .. it’s all within 15–20 minutes on foot. 📝 We didn’t pay for any church entries most attractions can be seen and experienced for free.(only the Vespa tour which was £50 and it was worth every penny) 🩵 If you’re thinking about visiting .. do it. No regrets, just unforgettable memories & I’d do it all again in a heartbeat 🇮🇹✨ ✈️ Next stop .. Malmö destination no 10 of 2025 ..
