Somtum Der offers authentic Northern Thai Isan food but is most famous internationally for the Thai papaya salad best known locally as "somtum".
Hence, it is without a doubt, that we ordered a two versions of the spicy papaya salad and other mains :
- Tum Pla Dook Foo
Crispy fluffy catfish on top served with spicy papaya salad. This is certainly a dish not to be missed. Super crispy fish and mixed with the spicy salad is simply divine.
Tum Poo - Plara
- Spicy papaya salad mixed with field crabs, peanuts, long bean, cherry tomato, lime, eggplant, dried shrimp and fermented fish dressing. Toss them together and add a little chilli powder for the additional zest. It's a must try if you have never eaten this with small crabs before.
Moo Ping Kati Sod
- Grilled marinated pork skewers deliciously glazed with coconut milk and served with steamed rice vermicelli and a special Thai 'Nam Jim Jiew' Spicy Dip. Their version is very flavourful and the dip makes it even more savoury. This is of course a better quality from the ones you get from the local street food carts around the night markets and street stalls.
Moo Rong Hai Der
- House Special Grilled Marinated Pork. Pork neck meat grilled to perfection with their own special spice blend and super tender and juicy.
Nue Dad Dieo
- Deep fried Sun-Dried Beef served with Sriracha Dip- a house special. Another dish you can try if you are still meat hungry lol.
Other dishes worth trying include :
Tub Tim Fish Meat Wrapped with Vegetables served with House Egg Sauce
- Phad Thai - Stir fried flat rice noodles with shrimp, peanuts, scrambled egg, bean sprouts etc a traditional local street food staple and a personal favourite of mine. Thailand most famous street food fried noodles !
If you need some carbs, you can also order their glutinous brown sticky rice to fill your stomach together with the meat :)
Lastly, finish the meal with drinks like the traditional Iced Thai Milk Tea, Iced Thai Lemon Tea and even a local Leo Beer !
Note : They also have another outlet in Thonglor, Sukhumvit if you stay near there instead. They also received a Michelin Star in 2016 for their outlet in New York, USA.
Okay do pop by and tuck into a hearty, traditional Thai meal there !
