Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is home to a historic castle known as Saint George's Castle. This ancient fortress, built from massive stones, features walls constructed in the 14th century, 77 towers, and approximately 34 large gates. The entire perimeter stretches about 2.3 kilometers, making it a truly impressive sight. Climbing to the top of the fortress offers a panoramic view of Lisbon, with expansive vistas. Saint George's Castle has witnessed several centuries of Portuguese history. Beyond its defensive role, it has served as a royal palace, military barracks, and national archive. Today, it stands as a historical monument and museum. Interestingly, the castle grounds also house an aviary with peacocks and owls. Visitors need to purchase tickets to enter Saint George's Castle, with adult tickets priced at €8.5. Upon entering, one is greeted by a statue of Saint George in a niche and a statue of King Manuel I of Portugal in the square. Wandering through the towering walls, moats, battlements, and towers evokes the atmosphere of medieval Europe. From the castle walls, the view of Lisbon is a sea of beautiful red-tiled roofs, exuding elegance and a sense of historical charm. One can also see the banks of the Tagus River and the massive statue of Jesus, which is quite a sight to behold.

I stayed in Lisbon for 3 days, including 2 full days and 2 half days. Although I didn't enjoy myself to the fullest, I have visited all the highlights. In summary, Lisbon is worth the money, with good food, fun and high cost performance‼ ️ Belem District: Jerónimos Monastery, Monument to the Discoverers, Belém Tower, and Belém Egg Tarts are must-visit spots. They are not far from each other and can be visited on foot. An afternoon is enough to visit them. Note⚠️The monastery is closed every Monday. We happened to be there on a Monday, so we could only take pictures outside. The building is very beautiful. Belem Tower is a good place to watch the sunset. Although the reviews of Belem egg tarts are mixed, I think they are delicious! I recommend experiencing the sunset sailing. It is really romantic to wait for the sunset on the sailing boat. The whole journey takes 1.5 hours, but don't go when it's cold. Come on, don't ask me how I know [Facepalm]. 🔹Old Town: Plan at least a full day to experience the citywalk in the old town, the colorful houses, the undulating slopes, every alley is picturesque, the Pica elevator, and the No. 28 tram are all beautiful scenery along the way. In April and May, you can still see jacaranda trees on the roadside, the purple color is so beautiful! I have previously written an article 📕 about a one-day tour guide to the old town, which you can refer to. 🔹Observation Deck: ✔️St. Lucia Observation Deck The free viewing platform near the cathedral has a good view of the red roofs. ✔️Saint George Castle Although it costs 15 euros🎫, it is located at the highest point and offers a 360° panoramic view of Lisbon. The view is better than other observation decks, and you can also watch the sunset. There are also many peacocks in the castle🦚 🔹Lisbon Surroundings: ✔️Cabo da Roca "The land ends here and the sea begins here", the westernmost point of the European continent, a must-see attraction, but the wind is really strong, don't wear a skirt! Most tourists check in near the stone monument and take photos and then go back, but I I recommend the hiking trail on the other side of the lighthouse. It is less crowded and has beautiful scenery. It is very stunning. ️ ✔️Azenhas do Mar A small town not far from Cape Roca. The town is small but beautiful. You can have dinner here and wait for a sunset. ✖️Hellmouth I kind of regret not coming here. We only planned to visit Cape Roca and Azenhas do Mar that day. I thought I would not have enough time, but after visiting it, I think I should have enough time to come here. 🍽️Food: Maria Catita and Solar 31 de Alfama in the old town are the restaurants where I felt I had no disappointments. Moinho Dom Quixote, not far from Cabo da Roca, has delicious food and great views. I strongly recommend that you come here to eat after visiting Cabo da Roca, but you will need to wait in line for a while. 🏨Accommodation: Dare Lisbon House Great B&B, good location, right near the Santa Justa elevator, next to the internet-famous seafood rice uma, there are many small shops to visit around, you can arrange half a day to buy souvenirs. 🚗Transportation: We used Bolt to take a taxi the whole way. We didn't want to waste time on traffic. It's very convenient to take a taxi. Moreover, it's not expensive to take a taxi in Portugal. It's recommended to take a taxi for 3-4 people. ️

It is one of the oldest trams in Europe. The tram traveling through the streets, hillsides, and in front of churches is one of the most representative postcard images of Lisbon. The more you ride, the more you'll love Lisbon. - ✅St. George's Castle: This is the highest point in the old district. Climbing up to the castle at dusk, with the colorful houses and the glittering sea, playing guitar and singing with a few good friends, waiting for the sunset to reveal dreamy colors, is the most romantic thing I can think of. - ✅Thieves Market: In the Alfama district's Santa Clara Square, every Tuesday and Saturday it turns into a bustling market. For those who like vintage items, or want to find some souvenirs, this is heaven. From tableware, decorations, records, books, cameras... everything is available, and the prices are beautiful and acceptable. - ✅Portuguese Egg Tarts: How can you come to Portugal and not try the authentic Portuguese egg tarts? Although egg tarts are a traditional dessert known to every household, and can be bought in any street or alley, to eat the most authentic and historic egg tarts, you still have to go to the century-old shop Pastéis de Belém in the suburb of Lisbon, Belem. - ✅Fado Music: In Lisbon's seaside, coffee spots, street shops, or anywhere else, you can hear the melodious and touching Fado. With over a hundred years of history, Fado music has been integrated into Lisbon's DNA, including graffiti elements of Fado that fill every corner of the streets.

São Jorge (Saint George) Castle is one of the oldest buildings in Lisbon, situated on a commanding height in the Alfama district, it was a fortress during the Moorish occupation of Lisbon in the Middle Ages. The castle itself... really isn't much to see, but the 360-degree view overlooking the entirety of Lisbon is unbeatable, making it the best viewpoint in Lisbon.

R. de Santa Cruz do Castelo, 1100-129 Lisbon, Portugal The Castle of Saint George (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge) is located in the capital of Portugal, Lisbon. From the ancient castle viewing platform, you can overlook the cityscape and the wide Tagus River. It is one of the main historical sites and tourist attractions in Lisbon. Archaeological research shows that humans have settled here since the 6th century BC, or even earlier. The first fortress on the top of Lisbon was built in the 2nd century BC. The early natives on the mountain were Celts and Iberian tribes. Phoenicians, ancient Greeks, and Carthaginians also left cultural traces here. Subsequently, ancient Romans, Visigoths, and Moorish colonists lived in the place where the castle is located. Middle Ages In the Christian Reconquista, in 1147, Alfonso I, with the help of the Second Crusade, took the castle and Lisbon from the Moors. There is a frequently repeated legend that the knight Martim Moniz noticed that a door of the castle was open, so he jumped into the door gap and used his body to prevent the Moors from closing the door. He sacrificed his life, but allowed Christian soldiers to enter. Lisbon has this castle, which resisted the Moors in the late 12th century. In 1255, Lisbon became the capital of the kingdom, and the castle became the palace. Around 1300, Denis I carried out repairs. Between 1373 and 1375, Ferdinand I built new city walls around Lisbon, some of which still exist. This wall, partly replacing the old Moorish wall, was intended to surround the previously unprotected parts of the city. It had 77 towers, a circumference of 5400 meters, and it was completed in just two years. For this reason, the Portuguese National Archives are still called "Archive Tower" (Torre do Tombo). Famous scholars Fernan Lopez and Gois worked there. In 1498, Manuel I received and celebrated the return of the maritime hero Da Gama, who discovered the sea route to India, in this castle. Modern times In the early 16th century, due to Manuel I's construction of the new Ribeira Palace on the banks of the Tagus River, the old castle began to lose its importance. The earthquake in 1531 damaged the castle, leading to its further decline. In 1569, King Sebastian ordered the reconstruction of the royal residence of Saint George Castle. However, this project was not completed. The Portuguese throne crisis that began in 1580 opened 60 years of Spanish rule, and the castle was used as a barracks and prison.
