The so-called "Oniga Castle" is actually a wonder of countless large and small sea caves and tuff uplifted by multiple earthquakes. It has been designated as a national natural monument and one of the 100 Scenic Spots of Japan. When you see for yourself the numerous sea caves of various sizes arranged in a stepped pattern along the coastline, forming a rugged natural landscape, and enjoy the rare scenery, the sound of the waves, the sea breeze, and the lights of Kumano, you will feel even more the magnificence of "Oniga Castle" and the wonders of nature. Moreover, walking more often in such a natural environment can make people healthier.
Oniga Castle is located on the Ise Road from Ise to Kumano Sanzan. The area is part of the former Kumano Kodo. The area along the Shichiri Beach is about 25 kilometers long. If you don’t have time to walk the entire 25 kilometers, you can walk around the 1-kilometer hiking trail. It takes about 40 minutes, including taking photos. However, please note that the hiking trail is quite rugged and some roads are very narrow, so you must be extra careful when visiting.
After visiting the Oniga Castle, you can also have a cup of tea, buy souvenirs and take a rest at the Kumano City Oniga Castle Center Complex at the entrance.
