The full name is Shanghai Xujiahui Catholic Church Library, also known as Huitang Stone Room. In the 27th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1847), the Shanghai Catholic Jesuit Society built a library in Xujiahui to collect Chinese and Western books. Later, it was expanded twice in 1860 and 1897 to form an independent two-story library. Today's Xujiahui Library not only continues the functions of reading services and document collection, but also expands functions such as document research and development, exhibition tourism, etc., to meet the society's needs for human cultural heritage - excellent historical buildings and old foreign language documents. The existing Xujiahui Library is two buildings staggered from north to south: the north building, the big study, was built in 1897. It is a two-story double-slope roof, brick-wood structure, and several European-style pilasters, pointed coupons, and pine shutters are installed on the north and south facades. The design concept and style of the two floors combine the connotation of Chinese and Western cultures. The upper floor is the Western Bookstore, and the layout and racks are in the style of the Vatican Library. The Jesuit Hospital, that is, the priest's building, was built in 1867 and was rebuilt several times.
