Shandongs's past...
Located in central Ji'nan, Shandong Provincial Museum is a huge and imposing brutalist structure that stands out on the busy street outside. Easily accessible by car or bus, the best time to visit is first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon, once the queues have subsided. Many groups visit here, so expect it to be busy!
Once inside, you immediately step into the impressive central space, which is magnificent with it's ceiling and steps. Off the central area, are the different large rooms housing the many historical artefacts from Shandong and the surrounding areas. Traditional art, sculptures, dresses, painting, calligraphy and learning areas will take you several hours to wonder around and see properly. Translation is in English too, which was helpful. There are shops to buy souvenirs and snacks too. In Ji'nan, it is highly recommended to visit here to learn about the history and culture. #tripblazers #2023travelwish #shandong

When you come to Jinan, you can't miss this museum.
The best way to understand a place is to go to its museum. When you come to Jinan, the Shandong Museum is a must-see. This museum, established in 1954, is grand in scale and rich in collections. The "Top Ten Treasures of the Museum" are worth checking out one by one!
The top ten treasures of the museum each have their own characteristics. Among them, the red pottery animal-shaped pot and the eggshell black pottery high-handle cup reflect the pottery-making process. The Yachou axe and the big jade wall of the Lu Kingdom are iconic collections. The Songgui and oracle bone inscriptions witness history. The bamboo slips of Sun Tzu's Art of War and Sun Bin's Art of War, and the murals of the Han Tomb in Dongping are cultural treasures. The nine-crown crown and the Qing Zhengbian double pine map axis are the crowns of the Ming Dynasty prince and Zheng Banqiao's paintings, both of which are treasures.
The "Top Ten Treasures of the Museum" of the Shandong Museum are all in the 6, 7, 8, and 9 exhibition halls on the 2nd floor, not far apart, and it is very convenient to watch in one stop.
What if there is still time after watching the "Top Ten Treasures of the Museum"?
The Shandong Museum has a permanent Buddhist statue art exhibition, Han Dynasty portrait art exhibition and three special exhibition halls on the first floor; the third floor mainly exhibits the African wildlife migration exhibition, archaeological achievements exhibition, etc.
Not enough to see? There is an art gallery next to the Shandong Museum. I'm afraid you don't have enough energy.
It takes a lot of physical strength to visit the Shandong Museum once, so be prepared.
The Shandong Museum is very easy to make an appointment except for summer vacations and long holidays, and you can make an appointment at the door.
Large luggage cannot be brought into the museum, and there is a storage place at the door.
After entering the museum, remember to ask the staff at the consultation desk for a museum guide to facilitate the tour.
I didn't catch any explanations in the museum for half a day. Whether to rent an interpreter or not, weigh it yourself.

Essence of Qilu Culture
'The grand Mount Tai, the guardian of the state of Lu,' this is the earliest record of Mount Tai in the Book of Songs; 'How majestic is the Mount Tai? Its green stretches endlessly in Qilu,' this is Mount Tai in Du Fu's writing. 'The waters of the Yellow River come from the heavens, rushing to the sea never to return,' on the land of Qilu, the ancestors lived by the river, thrived and multiplied, creating a splendid civilization in their struggle and coexistence with the Yellow River. During this museum visit, under the wonderful introduction of Teacher Feng from Ziyue Travel, we truly felt the pride of being Shandong people and the profoundness of Qilu civilization, and the children benefited greatly. We welcome friends from other places to visit Shandong, and the museum is a must-see. It will quickly help you understand Shandong culture.

Tiny specks of starlight converge into history—Shandong Museum (Part 7): Crystal Brilliance
Ascending to the third floor of the Shandong Museum, what comes into view is the 'Crystal Brilliance—Exploring the Wondrous World of Minerals' exhibition hall located in Gallery 19. Here, one can immerse themselves in the world of minerals, observing their forms, appreciating their beauty, and exploring and feeling the colorful world of minerals.
Visiting the mineral exhibition naturally means taking the time to appreciate the beauty of minerals.
Their unique shapes, dazzling colors, and shimmering luster make minerals a gift from the Earth to humanity, and nature's most poetic expression of beauty.
At the mineral exhibition, one can see the brilliant sunset-like splendor of crocoite, the deep-sea calm of aquamarine, the mysterious night-sky-like amethyst... ...As long as one has eyes that can see beauty, they can find all the beautiful scenes of this world in the colors, textures, and shapes of these minerals.
What's even more amazing is that some minerals are very 'introverted' and do not easily show their beauty. Under natural light, they appear quite ordinary, but under the stimulation of energy such as ultraviolet light, they emit dazzling fluorescence!
Minerals are there for people to explore and use in countless ways. They have accompanied human progress every step of the way, driving the development of human civilization. Did you know? Besides being used as jewels for people to admire, they can also become pigments for painting, and even medicines for treating diseases—truly magical!
In addition to displaying the minerals themselves, the Shandong Museum has also put a lot of effort into the atmosphere and experience of the exhibition.
Beyond creating a dreamlike atmosphere, the exhibition also replicates a real mine shaft, restoring it within the exhibition. Walking along the exhibition path, the winding mine shafts combined with the surrounding mine carts and tracks give visitors the feeling of 'mining'.

Twinkling stars gather into history—Shandong Museum (Part 5): Buddhist Statue Art Exhibition
Shandong was a flourishing land of ancient Chinese Buddhist culture and art. Buddhism in Shandong went through three important developmental periods: the Northern Dynasties, Sui-Tang, and Northern Song.
During the Northern Dynasties, Shandong Buddhism continuously integrated with Qi-Lu culture, creating a local style of Buddhist statues, among which the Xianglong Jialian decoration on back-screen statues and the 'thin clothing clinging' style of round sculptures were the most characteristic, standing out in the history of Chinese Buddhist statue art. The Sui-Tang and Northern Song were another two prosperous periods for Buddhist art in Shandong, represented by cliff carvings, pagoda underground palaces, and painted clay sculptures, all of which achieved high artistic accomplishments.
There are many types of Buddhist cultural relics in Shandong, including back-screen statues, individual round sculptures, pagodas, sutra pillars, stone boxes, steles, etc., made of materials such as limestone, white marble, and gold-bronze, spanning over a thousand years from the Northern Wei to the Ming and Qing dynasties, reflecting the statue styles of different regions and times in Shandong.
There are four types of Buddhist art relics in Shandong: grottoes, cliff carvings, sutra carvings, and individual statues, among which grottoes, cliff carvings, and sutra carvings are immovable cultural relics.
Since the 1980s, numerous Buddhist cache pits and pagoda underground palace remains have been discovered in Shandong, unearthing a large number of Buddhist statues and related cultural relics. Particularly in 1996, the excavation of the Buddhist cache pit at Longxing Temple in Qingzhou City, Shandong Province, brought to light a large number of exquisitely crafted and lavishly adorned statues from the Northern Dynasties, attracting great national and even international attention, and sparking a wave of research into Shandong's Buddhist statue art in the academic world.
The 'Buddhist Statue Art Exhibition' at the Shandong Museum focuses on individual statues, selecting representative forms of statue art from the Northern Dynasties period in Shandong, such as back-screen triad statues, individual round sculptures, white marble statues; Maitreya statues from the Sui-Tang to Song periods, statue steles, etc., showcasing the unique statue style of the Shandong region, as well as its brilliant achievements as the center of Eastern Chinese Buddhist art.

Twinkling stars gather into history—Shandong Museum (Part 3): Viewing New Year Paintings along the Canal
New Year paintings, originating from ancient 'Door God paintings', are one of the folk arts of China, as well as a common folk craft. New Year paintings are a unique genre of Chinese painting and an art form beloved by the rural populace. They are typically posted during the New Year to decorate the environment, conveying blessings of auspiciousness and festivity, hence the name 'New Year paintings'.
The subjects of New Year paintings are generally divided into four categories: deities and auspicious creatures, secular life, babies and beauties, and stories and legends. For example, 'Liu Hai Playing with the Golden Toad' tells the Taoist folk tale of Liu Hai playing with the golden toad and fishing for gold coins step by step, through which the common people pray for auspicious wealth and fortune.
'Viewing New Year Paintings along the Canal' breaks through the traditional chronological exhibition model, offering a dual-direction viewing route guided by the flow of the canal.
The Grand Canal includes the Sui-Tang Grand Canal, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the East Zhejiang Canal, spanning eight provinces and municipalities, providing an unceasingly flowing important channel for north-south exchange, driving the economic and cultural development of towns along the river, and also promoting the rise, spread, and prosperity of New Year paintings.
Entering from the north, the eye-catching red installation displays the characteristics of Shandong's New Year paintings, artistically restoring the usage scene of Confucius Mansion New Year paintings.
Every year, the Confucius Mansion would overlay new Door Gods directly on top of the old ones, hanging them in wooden frames. The main entrance often features 'armored warrior' images of martial Door Gods; the inner house doors feature literary Door Gods like 'promotion to officialdom', 'advancement in salary', and 'fortune star', expressing beautiful wishes for peace and prosperity.
Looking up, the lanterns also complement the New Year paintings. The 'Lantern Square' New Year paintings from Wuqiang, Hebei are very distinctive. Lantern Square paintings are used for lanterns, with subjects generally taken from operas and novels, playing an important role during the lantern viewing and riddle-guessing festival. Illuminated by candlelight, the colorful New Year paintings appear even more vivid and lively, and the diffused halo brings an antique effect.
From a regional perspective, Taohuawu woodblock New Year paintings and Tianjin Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings shine together, known as 'South Peach North Willow'.
Taohuawu New Year paintings are adept at using pink and light green, focusing on depicting urban life and citizen customs, especially with scenery, ladies, and literary, opera, and historical stories being the most typical, characterized by a fresh and elegant style. Tianjin Yangliuqing New Year paintings are characterized by delicate brushwork, beautiful characters, bright colors, rich content, diverse forms, and a harmonious atmosphere.
This ancient Chinese folk art of New Year paintings embodies the unique history, wisdom, values, and spirit of the Chinese nation, and is one of the most representative symbols of Chinese culture. The diverse New Year paintings showcase the common vision of happiness among ordinary people along the canal.

Glimmering stars converge into history—Shandong Museum (Part II): The Rites Travel Eastward
The special exhibition 'The Rites Travel Eastward: The Essence of Ancient Civilization in Shandong' at the Shandong Museum, although organized by the Tsinghua University Art Museum, displayed 465 cultural relics from more than 50 cultural and historical institutions across Shandong. Nearly half of these are first-class cultural relics. It can be said that the exhibition uses 'rites' as a thread to gather the fine cultural relics of Shandong, truly a magnificent sight.
The exhibition is divided into seven sections: 'Dawn's Early Light, Adorned with Rites', 'Mount Tai in Verdant Hue, Jade Rites to All Directions', 'Royal Rites in Lu, Long Transmitted Under Heaven', 'Splendid and Radiant in Lu', 'High Mountains Look Up, Climbing Tai to View the Sea', 'Renowned Craftsmen of the North, The East Smiles Gently', 'Painting Heaven and Earth, Steles Convey the Ancient'. It showcases from various perspectives the Eastern cultural genes of Chinese civilization and its own developmental journey, always inheriting the same lineage.
Stepping slowly into the exhibition hall, what catches the eye is the treasure of the Shandong Museum—the 'Eggshell Black Pottery Stem Cup' (Figures 1, 2). The cup is as thin as an eggshell, with a uniformly black and shiny color, symmetrical structure, and a smooth outline. It stands quietly and ethereally in the center of the entrance hall, silently conveying the ancient civilization of Shandong's simplicity, elegance, and profound solemnity. The design is clever, with the thinnest part of the rim less than 0.2 millimeters. The belly is decorated with cone-shaped openwork, and inside the belly is a clay ball that makes a sound when shaken. The Eggshell Black Pottery Stem Cup is a representative artifact of the Longshan culture, renowned in the art of modeling for being 'black as lacquer, bright as a mirror, thin as paper, and sounding like a chime', a product of the peak period of prehistoric pottery making.
The Nine-Tasseled Crown (Figure 3) was unearthed in 1971 from the tomb of King Zhu Tan of Ming Lu in Zoucheng, Shandong. The crown is made of finely woven bamboo silk into a hexagonal mesh, with the surface covered in black silk gauze, most of which has fallen off. The front and back of the crown are inlaid with rectangular gold frames with dwarf corners, with plum blossom gold piercings and gold hairpins on both sides. The outside of the yoke board is pasted with a layer of black gauze, which has faded. The Nine-Tasseled Crown, with tassels strung with red, white, blue, yellow, and black jade beads. Below the board is a jade balance, with holes for tying ropes at both ends of the balance, and each end has hanging ear pendants, which are round jade beads. This Nine-Tasseled Crown of King Zhu Tan is the only surviving early Ming dynasty crown in China, filling a historical gap and possessing extremely high historical and artistic value.
The exhibition displayed numerous pottery pieces unearthed from the Dawenkou culture to the Longshan culture period, with black pottery being mysteriously exquisite and painted pottery having beautiful patterns.
The Red Pottery Animal-Shaped Pot (Figure 4) is modeled after livestock and created with advanced pottery techniques. Its unique shape and rich connotations have made it one of the top ten treasures of the Shandong Museum. The Warring States Period Green Jade Bi (Figure 5) has a diameter of 30.9 centimeters, a size that is very rare. The artifact is flat and circular, with two raised bands dividing the surface into three areas, with the inner area featuring three groups of double-tailed dragon patterns, the middle area with shallow relief grain patterns, and the outer area decorated with five groups of double-tailed dragon patterns.
The Mandate of Heaven Box (Figure 14) was formerly in the collection of the Confucius Family Mansion. Carved from wood and gilded, the center features a vertical square blue plaque inscribed with the bilingual Manchu and Han characters 'Mandate of Heaven'. The whole is composed of a base, an inner box, and an outer lid. The base is in the style of a Sumeru pedestal, decorated with cloud patterns. The front has five dragons, and the sides and back have four dragons each, making a total of nine dragons. This box is exquisitely crafted, elaborately decorated, and regal, specifically used to preserve imperial edicts. It is not only evidence of the close relationship between the Confucius Family Mansion and the imperial court but also a symbol of the royal ceremony and demeanor of ancient China.
The Bamboo-Section Handle Bronze Wine-Drawing Vessel (Figures 18, 19) is a cultural relic from the Warring States period. It is said that there are only three such pieces in the country, consisting of a dragon head holding a ring, a bamboo-section handle, and a bud-shaped spherical base, hollow, with a hole at the bottom and on the handle.
It ingeniously uses the principle of atmospheric pressure to draw wine, predating the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment in Europe by more than a thousand years.

Shandong Museum: An Endless Exploration of History and Culture
Shandong Museum: An Endless Exploration of History and Culture
The moment I stepped into the Shandong Museum, I was overwhelmed by its grandeur. This museum, bearing the profound historical and cultural heritage of the land of Qi and Lu, seemed like a bridge through time and space, transporting me into an ancient and mysterious world.
However, its vastness also made me feel somewhat at a loss. I wandered between the exhibition halls, each step a reverence for history and a quest for culture. Two hours swiftly passed, and I had only visited six or seven exhibition halls, yet I already felt enriched and satisfied.
But this also made me realize that the treasures of the Shandong Museum are far from limited to what I had seen. Its richness and depth require more time to appreciate and understand. I could only leave with regret, looking forward to the opportunity to step into this ocean of history again.
The Shandong Museum is not just a museum, but also a treasure trove filled with stories and wisdom. Each visit is a dialogue with history, a collision with culture. I believe that one day in the future, I will return here to continue my endless exploration.

Come for an encounter with Shan Bo!
This time, it's all about the top ten treasures of Shan Bo, and I recommend everyone to check in each treasure according to the visiting order, it's definitely worth the trip! They are, in order: Dongping Han Tomb Murals, Red Pottery Animal-shaped Pot, Oracle Bone Inscriptions, Song Gui, Eggshell Black Pottery Cup, Lu State Large Jade Bi, Zheng Xie's Double Pine Map Scroll, Ya Chou Yue, 'The Art of War' by Sun Tzu and 'The Art of War' by Sun Bin on bamboo slips, and the Nine-Liu Crown.
Shandong has really produced many famous people, and the special exhibition of Li Qingzhao left a deep impression on me. A master once said: She had a bold personality and outstanding talent, but her status in the aristocracy and the education of feudal culture ultimately made her a writer who upheld the orthodox concepts of morality. There are many more stories about Li Qingzhao, which I will leave for everyone to study slowly.

Shandong Museum | Who can resist the sparkling gems?
| Who can resist the sparkling gems. On the top floor of the Shandong Museum, there is a niche yet dazzling exhibition.
It might be due to the location of the exhibition hall that even during the crowded summer vacation, there are very few visitors here.
Walking into the exhibition hall is like entering a real mine, with colorful crystals shining brightly, making it hard for one to move.
This exhibition, named 'Crystal Brilliance', is a collection of minerals and a gathering of precious royalty.
The exhibition shapes a magical mineral world through several aspects such as the origin of minerals, the beauty of minerals, and the application of minerals.
Crystals, fluorite, and gems are within reach, and these wonderful substances, shaped by natural forces, shine brightly under the diligent mining and carving of humans.
The history of mineral development is also the history of human civilization.
And these crystals will be passed down from generation to generation, possessing a longer lifespan than their laborers.
Gazing at these crystals, one feels the depiction of nature, sees the traces of the years, and the vitality of the Earth is right before our eyes, dreamlike and illusory.

Where to go in Jinan for the New Year? The super niche and beautiful Dunhuang exhibition is actually here
Is it crowded to take kids to see the exhibition during the New Year? Hard to make an appointment? Crowded? Poor experience?
90% of people don't know that there is actually a super niche art exhibition hall hidden in Jinan, where excellent works of art are exhibited every period. The current exhibition is the beautiful Dunhuang exhibition.
This place is the "Rongbao Jingxing Art Museum", located on the 1st and 11th floors of the "Bank of Beijing" diagonally opposite the Wanxiang City on Jingshi Road and the Shandong Provincial Museum.
The Dunhuang exhibition currently on display is the cave paintings by Master Niu Yujing from the Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute. Inside are several Tang Dynasty Bodhisattva images that Master Niu Yujing is best at copying, as well as a one-to-one replica of the No. 3 grotto, which is not open to the public, so you can only see it here~ And you can't take pictures inside the Dunhuang grottoes, but you can take pictures here, isn't it very lucky?
In addition to Dunhuang paintings, there are also replicas of ancient mahogany furniture here, all of which are restored classics, which can be experienced.
You can take your kids to experience the beauty of art, and it's quiet with few people, this is indeed a treasure venue for taking kids to exhibitions.

I took my child to visit the Shandong Museum and almost got heatstroke
After the exam, I took a break to visit Jinan in the two days before returning to school. Apart from visiting Baotu Spring and Daming Lake, I also visited the museum. Shandong, as a province with a large number of museums, currently has 647 museums. The number and types of museums are far ahead in the country. There are 18 first-class museums, and there are four in Jinan alone. You should know that Hebei only has three!
Today, let us take our primary school students to explore the Shandong Museum. Let's compare it with our Hebei Museum and talk about an obvious experience first!
Geographical location and layout:
The Hebei Museum is located in the city center, the location has not changed for decades, only expanded on the original basis. Limited by space (this cannot be changed), the layout feels a bit patchy. And I have never seen any signs of what exhibits are on each floor in obvious places. This is just my experience from the two times I went there and there were a lot of people.
The Shandong Museum was newly built in 1991 and then expanded again. The overall structure is a back-shaped structure, which is very atmospheric, and it is more reasonable to visit in a circular way. (Handan City Museum is also this structure, the experience is very good.) The exhibition information on this floor is marked in obvious places, and even the location of the treasure of the town hall is marked.
If you like to visit museums, then the strategy of visiting the museum in the morning and Daming Lake and Baotu Spring in the afternoon as mentioned on the Internet is not suitable for you. Giving the museum two to three hours is too tight because there are too many collections inside and there is not enough time. And you can't actually see it all at once, it's just a general idea, if you can, go several times.
Tour tips:
1, After making a reservation, just show the verification code, or you can directly swipe your ID card to enter.
2, The explainer can rent and return with the ID card by himself, if not, you can rent it at the service desk, the service is very good, they will tell you the order of visit and what the ten treasures of the town hall are.
3, Selfie sticks are not allowed, if you bring one, you can only store it.
4, It's hot inside, hot, hot, sweating all the way, down jackets can only be tied around the waist.
5, You can buy sausages, cold drinks and ice cream inside, temporarily deal with it, you can also bring some snacks. But nothing attracts children more than sausages.
6, The mineral exhibition and shell exhibition are very beautiful.
7, Our family has an older child who likes animals, and he really likes the African Great Migration Hall and the Shandong Dragon Hall.
8, I really like the 59-piece set of ancient people's travel picnic utensils, each oxidized pattern is absolutely beautiful!
9, You can park at the main entrance, the parking lot is quite large, but at about nine o'clock when the museum opens, about one third of it is already parked, but there are also paid parking lots nearby.

Travelogue of Shandong Museum
Shandong Museum
Shandong Museum, known for its elegant calligraphy, is also called Shandong Qinfu Slope.
The Shandong Museum is not very famous, but it exceeded my expectations, after all, it is a provincial museum.
The first floor is several themed exhibitions: Buddha statues, stone carvings, bronzes, full shape rubbings.
The Buddha statue theme exhibition has many Buddha statues unearthed in Qingzhou. Compared with Dingzhou, their materials and styles are different.
It is said that the bricks of Qin and the tiles of Han, but most of the stone carvings in the exhibition are from Han tombs, and there are even murals. The impressive ones are the Queen Mother of the West and the King of the East, which is the same theme as the jade screen in the Dingzhou Museum, the myth of the Qin and Han dynasties. There is also a picture of the Xiongnu battle, which reflects the hot political issues of the time.
The bronze exhibition explained why I saw so many Song Dynasty bronzes in the Zhejiang Museum, because of the development of Song Dynasty epigraphy and the gradual progress of the ancient style, this gentleman has to overcome the Zhou ritual.
Full shape rubbings, it belongs to the photographic technology before the film era.
The second floor is mainly the permanent chronological exhibition "Hai Dai Ri Xin". Prehistoric, Shang Zhou, Qin Han, Sui Tang, Ming Qing and so on. The two themed exhibitions on the second floor, the jade exhibition and the porcelain exhibition, are quite good-looking.
I wanted to take a look at Kaogongji on the third floor. As a result, it was closed, so I went to the mineral exhibition next to it and was amazed. Various beautiful minerals, natural decoration, unprocessed is very beautiful. I thought this was outrageous, but there were actually three display cabinets that were luminous, which was shocking.
When I came out, I found that Kaogongji was open, so I went to see it, but... well, there were only Sun Tzu's Art of War and Sun Bin's Art of War bamboo slips, nothing else.
