Getting to the City Center
Exchange around €10 per person at the airport, just enough for transport.
Currency exchange rates are better in the city.
Airport shuttle bus is available (5 EUR), but we ended up sharing a taxi with 2 other travelers for €7.5 per person (12.5 KM each).
Day 1 – Old Town Highlights
Sebil Fountain – Iconic wooden fountain, more symbolic than spectacular.
Sacred Heart Cathedral – Beautiful stained glass & Sunday masses.
Serbian Orthodox Cathedral – 19th-century church with classic architecture.
Latin Bridge – Near the site where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.
Eternal Flame Monument – A WW2 memorial, usually lit (except on snowy days).
Day 2 – Modern Views & Scenic Spots
Avaz Twist Tower – Amazing 35th-floor city view, free entry; drinks available at regular prices (beer ~5 KM).
Trebević Cable Car – Takes you up for panoramic views and a peaceful café break. (~20 KM roundtrip).
War Museum 1992 – Small museum near the cable car. Interesting but not outstanding (10 KM entry).
⛪ Places We Missed (Due to Snow or Time)
Tunnel of Hope – A must for history lovers; near the airport.
Vrelo Bosne – Nature park, better suited for longer stays.
White Fortress (Bijela Tabija) – Great views, especially at sunset.

Sarajevo: A City Where Multiculturalism and History Intersect
The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, is a city located at the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, known for its unique atmosphere where Eastern and Western cultures and religions converge.
However, this city was also the main battleground during the Bosnian War, which occurred in the 1990s following the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Traces of this conflict remain throughout the city, with one poignant example being the "Sarajevo Roses"—red resin-filled craters left by shell impacts, serving as a reminder of the value of peace.
🏙 City Atmosphere
- A multicultural city where Islam, Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity, and Judaism coexist
- The Old Town, Baščaršija, features a mix of Turkish-style bazaars, mosques, and churches
- Simply walking through the city allows you to experience the intersection of Europe and the Middle East
📸 Memorable Highlights
- "Sarajevo Roses": Red resin-filled craters marking missile impact sites from the war
- Bullet-riddled buildings, memorials, and the War Tunnel that convey the realities of the conflict
- Vibrant streets lined with cafes and restaurants, showcasing the warmth of the local people
📝 Reflections
- A place where beauty as a travel destination coexists with the memories of war, prompting deep thought
- More than just a tourist spot, it’s a city worth visiting to learn about its history and the sentiments of its people
- A truly special experience that made me feel, "I’m glad I came here."
✨ Key Points
- A "real Europe" where you can feel the coexistence of ethnicities, history, and culture
- Safe and tourist-friendly
- English is widely understood, making it a comfortable destination even for solo travelers

Built on April 6, 1946 to commemorate the first anniversary of the liberation from Nazi Germany, the monument was designed by architect Juraj Neidhart and features a bronze laurel wreath and an eternally burning flame.
