It is said that the peak of Baekludam in Hallasan Mountain was pulled up and thrown there, and it became Sanbangsan (395m). Unlike other mountains in Jeju, Sanbangsan has no crater. This five-meter-high rock cave on the cliff on the southwest side was originally called Sanfang Cave, but later it was called a temple because of the Buddha statues enshrined in it. Master Hye-ri (964-1053) of Goryeo (918-1392) lived here. Goryeo was a country established by Wang Jian (877-943) after unifying the divided Korean peninsula. Inside the cave, you can see Maro Island and the dragon's head-shaped coast along the coastline. On the top of the cave, water droplets drip down all year round and accumulate in the cave. The botanical area on the cliffs of Sanbangsan Mountain is designated as a nature reserve, where the unique boxwood grows in Jeju.
