Fishmonger-Run Seafood Tavern with Local Snake Wine in Okinawa
A perfect spot for family gatherings during the Dragon Boat Festival! Affordable and authentic seafood tavern! "Uomaru," a hidden gem loved by locals.
"Uomaru" was a delightful discovery made by my elder brother during our family trip. Operated directly by a fishmonger, the freshness of the ingredients is unparalleled. Every seafood dish is a testament to genuine quality and the chef's dedication. The atmosphere is simple and unpretentious, devoid of the flashy decor often seen in tourist spots, but it offers an authentic "local flavor." The kitchen is helmed by a seasoned Japanese chef, while the front-of-house staff, who can communicate in both Japanese and English, are from countries like Turkey and Nepal. Communication is smooth👌, and they provide photo menus in both Chinese and English.
We decided to visit on a whim, only to find the restaurant bustling with diners and a queue at the entrance. Despite waiting for about 20 minutes, we unanimously agreed that it was well worth it. The business is thriving, so if you plan to visit, making a reservation in advance is highly recommended to avoid long waits.
As for the food, the freshness of the sushi is evident from the first bite. The seafood rice bowl is rich in toppings with a layered texture, while the eel rice is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with aroma—an absolute must-order according to our family. Overall, this is a place frequented by locals, with no deliberate attempts to cater to tourists, making it a genuine reflection of the local culinary culture.
If you enjoy discovering hidden gems favored by locals and want to savor truly fresh seafood, "Uomaru" is a restaurant worth scheduling a visit.
It's a leisurely 10-15 minute walk from Kokusai Street, or the nearest station is "Akamine Station" (Yui Rail), about a 5-minute walk away. The restaurant is located along the Oroku Bypass, near Naha Airport, making it easily accessible.
