Robben Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site off the coast of Cape Town. It is known for being the prison where Nelson Mandela and many other politicians were held. You get to learn about South Africa’s struggle for freedom and apartheid history. Getting There - You board a cruise at V&A Waterfront from Nelson Mandela gateway. Do remember to book tickets from the official website. Highlights - Top highlight for me is having an ex-prisoner as a guide in the island to walk us through the prison grounds and facilities as he recounts his stories. It is a solemn place to appreciate the country's struggles in the past. There are two parts to the tour, one part is walking with the guide through the prisons and another will be taking a tour bus around the island to get an appreciation of what life was like in the island and famous landmarks. Another highlight is the beautiful coastal and ocean view. Rating - 10/10. An unforgettable experience for me which has important historical and cultural significance. Visitors can take a guided tour to learn about Mandela's story and South Africa's history. The island has spectacular sea views and is suitable for taking photos. There are food stalls nearby that offer simple drinks and snacks.

The tour cost R500 per ticket which includes a boat trip there and back, a bus tour around the island and a tour guide around the prison. It is a profound experience to be in the same building as Mandela was imprisoned in for many years and our tour with an ex prisoner on the island made it even more special. One criticism I have of the tour is that you start the tour on a boat, then your on a bus and then you're walking around with other tourists while the tour guide talks to you about the prison. There isn't enough time to walk around on your own or to reflect or discover the prison by yourself. This could easily be rectified with sign posts and a brochure.
