Ratu Boko is located about 3 km from the south of Prambanan Temple. The Ratu Boko area is located on a hill with a height of ± 195.97 m above sea level.
The Ratu Boko site is not actually a temple, but the ruins of a kingdom. Therefore, Ratu Boko Temple is often also called Ratu Boko Palace/Kratin Ratu Boko.
It is called Kraton Boko, because according to legend the site was the palace of Ratu Boko, Lara Jonggrang's father. It is estimated that the Ratu Boko site was built in the 8th century by the Buddhist Syailendra dynasty, but was later taken over by the Hindu Mataram kings.
The change in 'owner' caused the Kraton Boko building to be influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism aspect.

Once you found the place it is quite nice. When we wen there the google maps pin was wrongly guiding us yo a closed restaurant. Bu there are signs on the road so follow those. Nice view over the Prambanan Temple for the restaurant and a very spacious area with temple ruins all over. Good walk and nice views
We bought the combined ticket with Prambanan Temple. In the morning there is a free shuttle between the temples. Lovely.
Most the signs have an English translation which is good

RATU BOKO TEMPLE - YOGYAKARTA
Ratu Boko is located about 3 km to the south of Prambanan Temple. Ratu Boko area is located on a hill with an altitude of ± 195.97 m above sea level. Ratu Boko site is not actually a temple, but the ruins of a kingdom. Therefore, Ratu Boko Temple is often called the Ratu Boko Palace. It is called Kraton Boko, because according to legend the site is the palace of Ratu Boko, Lara Jonggrang's father. It is estimated that the Ratu Boko site was built in the 8th century by the Buddhist Syailendra dynasty, but was later taken over by the Hindu Mataram kings. The change of 'owner' caused the Kraton Boko building to be influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism. Ratu Boko Palace is a magnificent building that was built during the reign of Rakai Panangkaran, one of the descendants of the Syailendra dynasty. The palace, which was originally named Abhayagiri Vihara (meaning monastery on a peaceful hill) was founded as a place of solitude and focus on spiritual life. Being in this palace, you can feel peaceful while seeing the view of the city of Yogyakarta and Prambanan Temple with the backdrop of Mount Merapi. As a heritage building, Ratu Boko Palace is unique compared to other relics. If other buildings are generally in the form of temples or shrines, then as the name implies this palace shows characteristics as a place to live. This is shown by the existence of buildings in the form of poles and roofs made of wood, although now all that is left is only stones of stone. Explore this palace, then you will get more, one of which is a very beautiful sunset view. A tourist from the United States said, "This is the most beautiful sunset on earth."

Ratu Boko Temple
Ratu Boko is one of the most famous Keraton in Jogja. You should definitely go here for a quiet stroll in the morning or in the evening so you can see the beautiful sunset. The place is large enough so you won't often bump to another visitors while here. The stairs to go to the gate (Gapura) of the sites are great and not steep and has benches every few steps. The view along the steps in the staircases and in the sites even in the parking lot are stunning. But, mind you even tho this site are really large the toilets are only in a few spots. As the site are large, there are some sites that are closed because of unknown matters and a few area that can't be seen because of construction. Other than that you can see the traditional gate tower, keputren, temple miniature, and the bathing area easily. There are many benches scattered along the areas and the benches are located in shady locations too so it's really convenient ⛲️⛅️😍🍃🌿☀️ #solstice #urbanexplorer
