Just came back from Chaoshan, let me tell you some hard truths, it's recommended to watch this before you go
-
You say 'really exciting', and I'm already at the real Shantou.
Drinking authentic Chaoshan tea among the crowd in the small park
Infected by the passionate 'Chinese War Dance' Yingge dance
Watching the sun slowly set and dye the water into an orange sea~
-
Of course, Chaoshan is not just about Shantou.
When you're in Chaoshan, you must take a trip to Chaozhou~
Come see the 'bridge dismantling after crossing' at Guangji Bridge
Look at the largest archway street
Then have a steaming hot pot of congee and beef hot pot

The exquisite details of the Han River in Chaozhou are breathtaking.
🐲 A few minutes' walk from Chaozhou Ancient City, a small, iconic ancient temple in Chaozhou comes into view. In terms of architecture and Chaoshan culture, Qinglong Ancient Temple is known for its exquisite roof sculptures, including the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, the Heroes of the Gods, and the Three Kingdoms. It is also an important venue for Chaoshan temple fair culture.

Name: Qinglong Ancient Temple
Address: 100 meters southwest of Chaozhou Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall, Nantian Road, Xiangqiao District, Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province
Opening hours: 08:00-20:00
Tickets: Free
—————————
🐲 Qinglong Ancient Temple is located on the banks of the Han River, next to a park. It is a semi-open ancient temple, built in the Northern Song Dynasty, and is a representative cultural destination in Chaozhou.
🌟 Architectural features
Among the major temples in Chaozhou, the architectural level of Qinglong Ancient Temple is the pinnacle of Chaozhou's craftsmanship. The roof is particularly stunning, with its colorful and exquisite inlaid porcelain art, vivid figures, and bright colors. The wood and stone carving craftsmanship in the temple is also very impressive, making it a model of Chaozhou folk art.
🌟 Cultural heritage
Qinglong Ancient Temple has a deep cultural significance, built to commemorate loyalty and courage, highlighting Chaozhou folk art skills, and is an important place for the spiritual qualities and beliefs of the Chaozhou people. As the hardworking Chaozhou people went overseas to do business and immigrate, this culture gradually spread to Southeast Asia, becoming an important spiritual link connecting Chaozhou people at home and abroad.
🌟 Unique temperament
Compared to many temples based on Buddhist culture, the image and offerings of Qinglong Ancient Temple are not very common. I personally don't know much about it, and I don't know if it's Mazu culture or historical figures. If you know, please let me know. For example, the main deity, Anji Shengwang, and the various images on the roof are also vivid and beautiful.
🐲 The annual temple fair and sacrificial activities are also a very important cultural expression of Qinglong Ancient Temple, which is very grand and lively, reflecting the important symbol of Chaoshan culture. If you have the opportunity, you can go and see it.

For your first trip to Chaoshan, this article is all you need
After touring most of Guangdong, the most memorable place for me is the Chaoshan area, with delicious food, fun activities, and a culture that is uniquely local.

🎐 How to Enjoy Chaoshan
The Chaoshan region includes the cities of Chaozhou, Shantou, and Jieyang. The three cities share common roots, and during the Spring Festival, there are Yingge dances and You Shen activities. I recently went to Shantou➕Chaozhou, and you can refer to this 3 days 2 nights itinerary:
🟡 day1 Shantou
Shantou has good transportation and urban construction, suitable for city walks🚶
1️⃣ Little Park
A landmark of Shantou, with European-style architecture that's photogenic and beautiful, must-visit places include Xintiandi School, Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion, and Shantou Hotel.
2️⃣ Guiyuan
One of the most beautiful old buildings in Shantou, Premier Zhou once worked here, and the pink exterior walls are extremely beautiful.
3️⃣ Chaoshan Railway Old Site
The first commercial railway in Chinese history, with old buildings and damaged brick walls remaining.
4️⃣ Square Ferry
For just 2 yuan, you can enjoy the joy of a cross-river ferry🚢, with a service every 20 minutes.
5️⃣ Niang Island
The road leading to the sea, where you can take photos of ships floating in the sky with a telephoto lens.
🟡 day2 Nan'ao Island
Nan'ao Island belongs to Shantou, and the sea is very clear, with beautiful sea views on sunny days🌊
How to get to the island: Taking a taxi or driving yourself to the island requires a 96 yuan bridge toll; public transportation is available by taking bus 105 directly to Nan'ao Island, with a fare of 12 yuan.
My island tour route:
'📍Changshanwei Lighthouse→Qian'ao Bay Lighthouse→Zhannan Pavilion→Sancha Cliff Lighthouse→Qing'ao Bay→Rainbow Sea'
🟡 day3 Chaozhou
Chaozhou is more quaint compared to Shantou, and you can finish touring this small city full of life in just one day.
1️⃣ Guangji Bridge
One of China's four ancient bridges, with a stunning free light show every night at 8 o'clock.
2️⃣ Qinglong Ancient Temple
The roof fairies and Qinglong🐉 of Qinglong Ancient Temple are exquisitely beautiful, showcasing the unique inlaid porcelain craftsmanship of Chaoshan.
3️⃣ Kaiyuan Temple
A beautiful ancient temple from the Tang Dynasty, known as the 'First Ancient Monastery of Eastern Guangdong'.
4️⃣ Ji Lue Huang Gongci
Known as the number one wood carving in Chaozhou, the gold-painted wood carvings on the beams are intricate and lively.
5️⃣ Zhenhai Tower
Once the government office of Chaozhou Prefecture, the night view when the lights are on is absolutely stunning🌉
6️⃣ Paifang Street
The central street of Chaozhou ancient city, with 22 archways lighting up at night, the night view is even more beautiful.
🍝 Chaoshan Food Recommendations
Here's a list of must-try foods when you visit Chaoshan:
Pot porridge, raw pickles, rice noodle rolls, marinated goose, fan sha, beef hotpot, Chaozhou raw fish, oyster pancakes, fermented tofu chicken wings😋
If you have more time, you can also visit Jieyang. The food, scenery, and historical culture of Chaoshan are well worth experiencing.

It's hard for the temples in Chaozhou to be 'low-key'
The most famous temples in Chaozhou are Kaiyuan Temple in Paifang Street and Qinglong Ancient Temple. Today, I visited Qinglong Ancient Temple 🐉.
🐉Ancient Temple Ticket: Free
🐉Visiting Hours: 8:00-20:00
Facing the Han River, the location is quite good, away from commercial noise, here is the strong local atmosphere, you can also walk along the river to Guangji Bridge. There are often fairs and temple fairs, you can come to worship specially.
On the top of the temple, the Three Kingdoms, the loyal Yang Family Generals, and the Gods of the Gods are all on the roof, with exquisite workmanship. This is a kind of 'inlaid porcelain' craft in the Chaoshan area, commonly known as 'Tie Rao', which is said to have a history of three hundred years and belongs to the intangible cultural heritage. Various colorful porcelain pieces, characterized by bright colors, durable, windproof, rainproof, and sunproof. Such a 'low-key' temple can be so exquisite, it is really worth careful observation.
