The Plaosan temple complex, like the Prambanan temple complex, was built by the Rakai · Picardan dynasty at almost the same time. It incorporates religious symbols and carvings from Hinduism and Buddhism. In front of each main temple stands two huge statues of dwarapala, the patron saint of temples. Note the unusual three-part design of the main monastery, a two-story, three-chamber structure with a man-made layer above and the stupa rising up to a larger central top. Impressive stone statues of Bodhisattvas are preserved in each room, flanking an empty lotus pedestal, and many windows have elaborately carved dragon heads. The North Plaosan Temple consists of two identical restored main temples surrounded by nearly 126 small temples and solid stupas, most of which are now piled up in a pile of rubble. South Plaosan Temple has many stupas and the remains of a temple, but restoration work does not appear to have begun there.
