Piha Beach is such a wonderful beach with fine jet black sand that feels great to walk through. It is dominated by Lion Rock an extinct Volcanic plug. The waves come crashing in and it is a good beach for surfing but for swimming I would advise swimming where the lifeguards are as there can be currents. When I arrived in Auckland in the morning, after staying at the hotel, my friends were not sleepy.
