Pha That Luang Stupa is one of the must visit places in Vientiane which is located right in the center of Vientiane…
This breathtaking structure, also known as the Great Sacred Stupa, is tall and considered a symbol of national pride and cultural heritage.
Afterall, the original Pha That Luang Stupa was believed to have been built by the Indian Emperor Ashoka, who sent missionaries to spread Buddhism across Southeast Asia.
Besides, it is also said that the stupa contains a relic of the Buddha, thus making it an important pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees.

🔱In the year 1566, King Setathirak of Lan Xang built a large tower on the basis of the small tower, named "Pha That Luang Chanthabouly Ratsamani", meaning the stupa of the Buddha's relics, where the Buddha's relics are buried under the tower.
·

Quiet a big areal and nice walk, so do not do this at midday. There is some shade on the surrounding walkway, but also the walk to the different sight is uncovered. The Stupa is really big for Laos, if you have been in Burma Yangon maybe small! the color is really nice and golden and the light does reflect nicely. The entrance fee was okay, even its not too much to see.

Shimmering Gold Temple of Vientiane, Laos
Pha That Luang, or the Great Stupa, is one of the most important national monuments in Laos and a symbol of both the country’s Buddhist heritage and its sovereignty. Located in the capital city of Vientiane, the stupa’s origins are believed to date back to the 3rd century when it was initially constructed as a Hindu temple. It was later converted into a Buddhist monument and underwent significant reconstruction in the 16th century under King Setthathirat, who moved the Lao capital to Vientiane and commissioned the restoration of Pha That Luang in its present form.
The stupa’s architecture is rich in symbolism. Standing 45 meters tall, its tiered structure represents the different stages of enlightenment in Buddhism. The central spire is surrounded by smaller stupas and golden towers, creating a stunning visual effect, especially when illuminated by the sun. Pha That Luang is covered in gold leaf, making it an even more impressive sight.
The monument is the centerpiece of the annual Boun That Luang festival, which takes place in November and draws thousands of Buddhists from across Laos and neighboring countries. During this festival, devotees offer alms and participate in processions and ceremonies around the stupa, celebrating the religious and cultural significance of the site.
Pha That Luang has endured various periods of destruction and restoration throughout history, including damage by invading forces in the 19th century. However, it has always been rebuilt as a lasting symbol of Laos’ resilience and faith.

The Great Stupa in Vientiane
The golden stupa is very prominent and can be seen from afar. It is located in the heart of the capital city, Vientiane. We arrived in the late morning when it was quite hot. We bought a lot of fried bananas for 20 baht in front of the stupa. 😁
If you go inside, you will see that it is very large and tall. Navin Kara came to pay respects and make a wish.
At the back, there is also a reclining Buddha. Around the area, there are souvenir shops where you can buy items similar to those in Pattaya.

Phra That Luang with Golden Stupas
#temples #100waysoftravel
Laos, with its rich tapestry of Buddhist traditions, is home to several remarkable temples that offer a glimpse into the country's spiritual and cultural heritage. Among the most significant is Phra That Luang, situated in the heart of Vientiane. Known as the "Great Stupa," Phra That Luang is a symbol of Laos and a beacon of Buddhist faith.
Constructed in the 16th century, this golden stupa was built to enshrine relics of the Buddha. Its resplendent golden facade, surrounded by smaller stupas and intricate carvings, reflects traditional Lao architectural style and continues to be a focal point for religious ceremonies and national celebrations. There are many artifacts on display for viewing too.

Vientiane, Laos - A Rare Hidden Gem
Here you will find low prices and simple folk customs
Here you will find Buddhist temples of various styles
Here you will find the quietly flowing Mekong River
Transportation🚴
I chose to cross the border from Thailand to Laos
You can first take a flight✈️ from Bangkok to Udon Thani, then take a bus through the Nong Khai border to Vientiane. This is half the price of flying directly from Bangkok to Vientiane!
Public transportation within Vientiane is not well developed. You can choose to take the local tuk-tuk, which is inexpensive. Generally, a single ride costs no more than 10r.
Of course, walking through the city center of Vientiane is also a great option!
Food🍜
Here, you can DIY your own fruit smoothie. Choose the fruits🍉 you want, and the staff will put them into the juicer to make a smoothie for you, which is refreshing and cool!
You can visit the Mekong Night Market and Vientiane Night Market, where you can find cheap and affordable Southeast Asian food. You can eat well for less than 50r!
You can also choose to shop at the local department store, Vientiane Center Shopping Mall, which is said to be invested by Chinese people.
Attractions🗼
That Luang Stupa
Patuxay
Haw Pha Kaew
Wat Si Saket
Lao National Museum
You can visit all the attractions in the city in one day. If you have more time, you can visit Wat Xieng Khouane (Buddha Park).
About the China-Laos Railway🚞
Vientiane Station is the terminus of the China-Laos Railway.
If you are departing from China, traveling from Kunming, Yunnan to Vientiane, Laos, you can book tickets directly on websites like 12306 and Ctrip.
If you want to travel in the opposite direction, it is more troublesome. Domestic platforms do not support it, and Laos does not have a mature online platform for booking tickets. Local residents buy tickets at the train station 7 days in advance, so you may need to find someone online to buy tickets in advance!
Accommodation🏨
Hotels in Vientiane are generally affordable. I stayed at the Malina Hotel, which has a swimming pool and a café. A standard room costs about 170r per night, and the accommodation environment is okay.
It is recommended to stay in the city center, near the Mekong River area, which is close to various attractions and allows you to experience the local atmosphere.

Vibrant Vientiane: Laos' Laid-Back Capital
Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, is a charming and tranquil destination that offers a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Southeast Asia's more frenetic cities. Located along the banks of the Mekong River, Vientiane is known for its serene Buddhist temples, French colonial architecture, and relaxed atmosphere.
What to Expect
Visitors to Vientiane will find a city that feels more like a large, friendly town. The city's wide boulevards are lined with trees, and its streets are relatively quiet compared to other capitals in the region. The blend of Laotian, French, and Thai influences is evident in the city's cuisine, architecture, and cultural practices.
Experiences and Recommendations
Exploring Vientiane's temples is a must. Start with Pha That Luang, the most important national monument in Laos, believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha. Its golden stupa is a symbol of Lao sovereignty and Buddhism. Another significant temple is Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple in Vientiane, which houses thousands of tiny Buddha images and a museum of religious artifacts.

Beautiful That Luang stupa
That Luang Stupa is the symbol not only of Vientiane city, but Laos country. The construction of the temple started in 1566, when the King Setthathirat relocated his capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane.
Around the That Luang Stupa there is a beautiful small park, with a king Setthathirat's monument, a big reclining Buddha statue and a couple of shrines decorated in Laos style.

Next to the Wat Taluang, there is another temple called Wat Taluang Nu
On either side of Wat Taluang, there are two more temples. The one on the left is Wat Phra Non (introduced in another text), and the one on the right is Wat Taluang Nu, with a red roof and yellow walls, which are particularly eye-catching.
There is another magnificent golden temple nearby, with a tall spire, and a standing Buddha on each side of the entrance, which are very spectacular and beautiful.
The entire square is wide and clean, with some tall trees guarding this sacred land like soldiers.

Laos | The most worth visiting in Vientiane is the That Luang
That Luang ranks first in Vientiane attractions, and That Luang is not allowed to enter for visit. It is said that the relics of Sakyamuni are buried under the tower.
The whole body of That Luang is golden, and there are pavilions for worship on all four sides of the bottom.
That Luang was originally built in the 3rd century. The shape of That Luang we see now was rebuilt by King Setthathirat in 1566 AD. In 1560, he moved the capital of the Lan Cang Kingdom from Luang Prabang to Vientiane and rebuilt That Luang, adding 30 small towers around it, and started the custom of That Luang Festival.
It is said that the ancient That Luang was covered with gold foil all over the body. In 1828, the Siamese invaders stole the real gold on the outer layer and severely damaged That Luang. In the early 1990s, it was restored by France, but the restored That Luang was replaced with gold paint instead of real gold.

Wat Si Saket in Vientiane, Laos
Wat Si Saket is one of the many temples in Vientiane. Although it is not very large, it is popular because it is just a street away from the famous That Luang Temple and is protected by a huge reclining Buddha.
Inside, there is a very exquisite and tall sculpture, with a prince-like figure pulling a bow and arrow. There are also several angles from which you can photograph the large golden pagoda of That Luang Temple.
The surrounding wall is also quite distinctive, all of them are golden pagodas of respected and wealthy families, which is spectacular.
