Best Things to DoNo.4 of Best Things to Do in Kamikawa District
Cycling
Patchwork Road is a rural path flanked by rolling hills, with fields of wheat, buckwheat, potatoes, and other crops creating a colorful patchwork landscape. It features the Ken & Mary Tree, known from the Skyline car commercial, and the Seven Stars Tree, famous from the Seven Stars cigarette advertisement. These country paths are perfect for walking and cycling, leisurely enjoying the surrounding rural scenery. Around JR Biei Station, there are several bicycle rental shops. The rental fee for a regular bicycle is generally 200 yen per hour, while an electric bicycle is about 600 yen per hour, as the hilly terrain can be quite challenging. You can choose a suitable bicycle based on your ability. Car rental shops usually offer various maps and travel brochures, and some can store luggage for you, making it easy to travel light. You can also store luggage at the Shiki Information Center next to Biei Station. From JR Biei Station, take Route 237 behind the station, and follow the signs and map through the country roads to reach the Patchwork Road deep in the countryside. Cycling the entire route takes about 3-4 hours, so it's recommended to adjust the route according to your stamina. Of course, you can take a sightseeing bus to explore the picturesque scenery of Pinbu Road, but it lacks the sense of freedom and closeness to the countryside.
