Exhibition Countdown | Girls as Girls Otani Shuzo Gallery
💙The solo exhibition of artist Maria Fara, "Girls as Girls", presented by Otani Shuzo Gallery, has come to the last week of its exhibition. This is the artist's second solo exhibition in Shanghai, showcasing 12 of her new paintings. Interested friends should hurry up!
💙Fara is good at using bright colors to depict daily life, unforgettable scenes, and animals or pastries she is interested in. She captures the complexity of women by excavating images of parallel cultures and events from her adolescence to today.
💙The exhibition, titled "Girls as Girls", is a transformation from the original phrase "Girls will be Girls", which contains a certain compliance or acceptance of gender-specific behaviors. By changing it to the present participle tense, Fara brings the phrase back to the moment before any judgment is made about gender.
💙Fara emphasizes the importance of contrast in the painting of the same name as the exhibition. In terms of color and form, brightness is neutralized by darkness, and sharp angles contrast with soft blurs. In her new paintings, patterns that are common and recurring in the artist's works, such as high heels and makeup tools, are intertwined with various thematic images. The fascination with smartphone content, the involuntary crying posture facing broken glass, creates a scene questioning this concept of "girlhood". The key colors of black, white, and red run through the entire exhibition and are deliberately chosen to create eye-catching contrasts in each painting.
