The Old Town of Mombasa is located on the southeastern edge of Mombasa Island and consists of two blocks, Kibokoni to the south and Makadara to the west. Walking through the old city, the architectural styles on both sides are very varied, and the urban customs of Arabia and Portugal are intertwined here. Here you can see the beautifully crafted viewing balconies with beautiful Swahili wooden doors, through which you can see the narrow streets, souks and winding paths leading to the harbour. Small shops here can buy many gadgets, there are many historical sites around the city, and there is a Chinese bank monument in the city.

Kenya | Mombasa | Organised Chaos
The city of Mombasa is one you shouldn’t skip if visiting Kenya. It is a vibrant, historical place and cultural hub that cannot be missed if you want to experience Kenya.
Mombasa Island can feel chaotic but other areas of the city can offer much needed tranquility.
When visiting Mombasa’s old town, we were particularly warned to be careful of small theft/pickpockets. However, the local government seems to be trying to make it safer for tourists and has reinforced the presence of security officers.
