Marseille: The Breath of the Mediterranean, Echoes of History, and My Whispers with It
Marseille, a city whose name alone evokes sunshine, sea breezes, and a sense of history. Unlike the glamorous Paris, it possesses a rugged, passionate, and even wild charm that deeply attracts me. Before arriving in Marseille, my imagination was limited to postcard images: the azure Mediterranean, the colorful old port, and the hidden stories beneath ancient city walls. However, the real Marseille is far richer, more complex, and unforgettable than I had imagined. This is not a simple travel guide, but a dialogue with Marseille, a collision of souls, a journey filled with surprises, reflections, and emotions.
Upon first arriving in Marseille, I was greeted by the salty Mediterranean air, mixed with the scent of fish and unknown spices. The intense sunlight and rolling heat waves were a stark contrast to the romantic, slightly melancholic Mediterranean vibe I had imagined. Yet this passionate and exuberant atmosphere quickly won me over. I wandered through the narrow streets of the old port area, feeling the uneven cobblestones beneath my feet and the weathered walls of old buildings around me, which spoke of Marseille's long history and the passage of time.
The old port area is the soul of Marseille. The bustling crowds, the constant cries of vendors, the comings and goings of fishing boats, and the seagulls circling overhead—all are full of life. I sat at a café by the port, ordered a coffee, and watched the shimmering sea, feeling the breath of the Mediterranean. Everything here is vibrant, filled with the unique passion and exuberance of the Mediterranean.
I wandered through the old port area and visited the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. Perched on a cliff by the sea, its white exterior gleamed in the sunlight. Inside, the basilica was solemn and serene, with stained glass windows casting soft light, creating a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. From the balcony of the basilica, one can overlook the entire old port area and the distant azure Mediterranean.
Leaving the old port area, I headed to Calanques National Park. This is one of the most beautiful places in Marseille, with steep cliffs, clear waters, and rich flora and fauna, forming a breathtaking natural landscape. I walked along the winding mountain paths, admiring the beautiful scenery along the way and marveling at the wonders of nature. By the sea, I took off my shoes and walked barefoot on the soft sand, feeling the coolness of the water and the warmth of the sun.
In Calanques National Park, I also experienced kayaking. Paddling through the clear waters, admiring the beautiful surroundings, was an indescribable pleasure. The sunlight sparkled on the sea, the sea breeze gently brushed my face, and I felt as if I were in a paradise.
However, the beauty of Marseille is not just superficial. In the streets and alleys of Marseille, I also saw issues such as the gap between rich and poor and social conflicts. In some remote corners, I saw homeless people and beggars, whose living conditions starkly contrasted with the prosperity of Marseille. This made me reflect that the development of a city should not rely solely on economic growth but also focus on social justice and the interests of vulnerable groups.
In Marseille, I tasted a variety of delicacies, from seafood to bouillabaisse (Marseille seafood stew), all of which left me with endless aftertastes. Fresh seafood, paired with Mediterranean spices, was delicious and unforgettable. However, food is not just a treat for the taste buds; it is also a cultural experience and a way of life.
In Marseille, I also met some locals and exchanged our lives and cultures. Their hospitality made me feel the human warmth of Marseille. Through our conversations, I learned about the history and culture of Marseille and the lifestyle of its people. Their passionate and resilient spirit deeply moved me.
On my last day in Marseille, I returned to the old port area and quietly gazed at the city. The sunset cast a golden-red hue over the entire port. I seemed to see this city, having weathered countless storms over the years, still maintaining its unique charm.
As I left Marseille, my heart was filled with reluctance and profound reflections. Marseille is not just a city but an unforgettable journey and a life experience. It gave me a deeper understanding of Mediterranean culture and a deeper reflection on the meaning of life. The passion of Marseille will forever burn in my heart. Marseille, goodbye! I look forward to meeting you again, feeling the breath of the Mediterranean, and listening to the echoes of history once more.
