Spring has probably arrived in Kanto Japan, the cherry blossoms have begun to bloom. Yesterday I went to Aguri Park in Kanagawa. The park with many cherry trees like Harymeki zakura is in full bloom, at the foot of the cherry blossom trees are yellow canola flowers. And together they make a wonderful scene. The park is also having a cherry blossom festival, I ate a cherry ice cream and it was very yummy with mochi rice in it. My favourite early Sakura viewing spot is at the outskirts of Tokyo. The early Sakuras are called kawazu Sakura. This is a park/mountain situated near Matsuda JR station and it is covered by the JR pass~ They hold usually hold the Sakura Masturi (festival) in late February to early march. The view from the top is also fantastic. If you are lucky enough, you may even see Mount Fuji! It is best to go during a weekday as there may be a crowd during the weekends. However, there is an entrance fee for the park, approximately 300 yen. Trust me, the view is worth every penny. You can either choose to walk from the station to the park or wait for the bus which always have a long queue. Walking is the best as you can also see the small unique shops along the way. The main reason for our trip to Tokyo this time was to see the Kawazu cherry blossoms, a deep pink variety that blooms only from February to early March. When we went, it was 5 days after the full bloom. This variety is quite hardy and can survive for 7-10 days after the full bloom. The Kawazu cherry blossoms here are planted all over the hillsides, alternating with fields of bright yellow nanohana flowers.
