[2025 Hoa Lu District Attraction] Travel Guide for Núi Ngoạ Long (Lying Dragon Mountain) (Updated Jun)
2.0
Núi Ngoạ Long (Lying Dragon Mountain) Address:
6WHP+W3C, Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình, Vietnam
Best view in Ninh Binh, Vietnam
Nui Ngoa Long is located in Ninh Binh, northern Vietnam. Ninh Binh itself is a very popular tourist destination that is about 100km from Hanoi. From Hanoi, you can take a 2h bus ride to get to the city.
Amongst Ninh Binh’s attractions, Nui Ngoa Long is a famous attraction known for its great views. It is located together with Mua Cave which is also a popular attraction. To get to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain, one has to climb around 500 steps. At the top, there is a tower for photo-taking, though there is likely a queue for this.
Near the tower is a dragon sculpture which is the best spot for observing sunrise or sunset. Do note that there are no proper steps leading to the dragon, so you will have to stand on the ledges. Depending on the season and time, these ledges may be quite crowded (and somewhat dangerous) as well.
I visited during Tet (traditional Vietnamese new year) in February and there was quite a crowd at Nui Ngoa Long. Regardless, we enjoyed the great views and good weather.

Climbing to the top of Lying Dragon Mountain – A view worth every step!
During my trip to Ninh Binh, I hiked up Núi Ngoạ Long (Lying Dragon Mountain) – one of the most scenic spots in Vietnam. The climb is steep with over 500 stone steps, but the panoramic view at the top is breathtaking: limestone peaks, lush rice fields, and the Tam Coc river winding below. The stone dragon at the summit adds a mystical charm and makes for great photos 😉📸
Tips: Go early morning or before sunset to avoid the heat and crowds. Wear comfy shoes and bring a bottle of water.
This is the place I wish to visit again one day ☺️

|Vietnam|Ninh Binh's Lying Dragon Mountain - Climb to the dragon's back and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Ninh Binh.
Lying Dragon Mountain, often referred to as the "Vietnamese Great Wall," features winding stone steps that follow the mountain's contours. After climbing approximately 500 steps, you’ll reach the summit, where you can take in the stunning views of expansive rice fields, winding rivers, and karst landscapes. The open vistas are truly awe-inspiring.
At the peak, a coiled stone dragon stands as a symbol of the spirit guarding Ninh Binh's land. Standing at the dragon's tail, feeling the breeze, and gazing over the vast terrain creates an unforgettable memory. During sunset, the entire valley is bathed in magical light and shadow, resembling a heavenly scene.
✨Tips:
Best visiting times: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the most beautiful lighting.
Recommended attire: Breathable clothing + sneakers + hat.
What to bring: Keep it simple and light; water for hydration.
📸 Photo tips:
The rocky high point near the dragon’s body is perfect for capturing a majestic backdrop.
A shot looking back on the stone steps offers a charming mountain-town vibe.
Rice field seasons (May-June, September-October) showcase the most vibrant colors!

🐉 Climbing the Lying Dragon: A View Worth Every Step in Ninh Bình
Climbing Núi Ngọa Long, or Lying Dragon Mountain, was one of the highlights of our trip to Ninh Bình. Be prepared—it’s a bit of a physical challenge, especially under the hot sun, but every step is worth it once you reach the top.
The ascent involves about 500 steep stone steps, winding through dramatic limestone cliffs. Thankfully, you can take your time going up, and there are small makeshift drink stalls along the way offering cold water, coconuts, and other refreshments. Prices are understandably a bit higher due to the location, but very welcome when you need a break.
Once at the summit, you’re rewarded with unmatched panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, rice fields, and winding rivers of Tam Cốc. The iconic dragon statue perched along the ridge adds to the charm and provides an incredible photo opportunity. It’s no surprise why this place is often called the “Great Wall of Vietnam.”
Whether you’re into hiking, photography, or just soaking in nature’s beauty, Núi Ngọa Long is a must-visit. Just don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water!

Ninh Binh Trang An 1 day comprehensive itinerary
📍Address: Trang An (Di Sản Tràng An) => if you search on google map, I recommend searching for the phrase in the bracket. About 2 hour drive from Hanoi. Car parking fee applied at the area (but I don't remember the price... sorry 🥲)
💰Entrance/Boat tour price: 150,000vnd (about £14-15 depends on the currency exchange rate). This will cover you to choose 1 from 4 boat routes.
✨️Suggested boat route:
Depends on your purpose, route 1 is more of a culture route. it is the longest route and takes you through many temples and caves. You will also have a chance to get off the boat to climb abit through the mountains (not all to the top) to reach an old temple.
Route 3 and 4 are shorter but more for nice photos and Instagram post. I went for route 1 this time, it's a nice route for culture explore (but of course I didn't get chance to take the iconic Instagram photo)
I haven't tried route 2 yet... If you have please comment 😊
🏖️Time to go: I went around March, which is the off-peak time for holiday. The weather is nice, and I went in in the morning so it's not too sunny. The weather is cool with nice breeze.
📍Adjacent area that worth visiting: Hoa Lu old town and if you still have time then try Tam Coc Bich Dong
📸Photo spots: anywhere along the boat tour route, the sceneries are stunning
🍴Food to try:
Duc De Restaurant (there are 2 branches in Ninh Binh) => suitable for family meal lunch or dinner. Recommend to try their steam goat meat and scorched rice with special soup (I dont think they have English menu but we can all use google translate :v)
Mien Luon ba Phan (Miến Lươn bà Phấn): I recommend try the phrase in bracket for correct location on google map. breakfast restaurant but open kinna all day from 5am to 8pm. only has 3 options of eel glass noodle, eel eggnoodle or eel porridge, all are delicious, I prefer eel porridge. regular bowl is 60,000vnd (about £1.75) and large bowl is 80,000 (about £2.5)
We went for a day trip so I couldn't recommend accommodation

Most people who go to Mua cave don't go Mua cave!
yes, we almost didn't go Mua Cave itself! we just followed the crowd to climb up the stairs to the top, not realizing that it is not mua cave!
- the lotus ponds are very #instagrammable
- the view from the mountain top is very nice
- yes, the climbing worth it!
Mua Cave is about 100m beside and at least 90% of the visitors did not go there. I understand why because it is underwhelming comparively.

Nature Whispers Serenity & Time Stand Still
In Ninh Binh, I found peace in nature’s embrace. Climbing Hang Mua Cave, the panoramic view of emerald rice fields and winding rivers left me breathless. At Bai Dinh, the serene temple grounds whispered stories of devotion and timeless beauty. Surrounded by tranquility, I felt humbled, connected, and truly alive. The gentle rustling of leaves, the distant hum of nature, and the endless horizon reminded me that simplicity holds the greatest charm.
