The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) was built between 1949 and 1952, with the involvement of more than 60 architects, engineers and artists. It has a long history and is one of the best universities in Mexico and the highest ranked in Latin America. In addition to its many scholars, it is also known for its exquisite architecture and excellent football tradition. UNAM was formerly the Royal and Roman Catholic University. Originally located in the city center, it gradually moved to the current university city in the 1950s. UNAM covers a large area and there are special sightseeing buses around the entire campus. In 2007, UNAM was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its outstanding buildings concentrated in the north. The UNAM campus in the city center embodies a unique 20th century modern style, combining urbanization, architecture, engineering, landscape design and art, especially the 10-story mosaic on the facade of the Central Library (Biblioteca Central). It also draws on local traditions, especially the historical evolution of the pre-Spanish colonial period. The campus has outstanding social and cultural value, has been widely acclaimed and is one of the most important landmarks in Latin America.
