Breathtaking Scenery, Endless Grasslands of Nalati!
Our last stop in Xinjiang was a day trip to the Nalati Grasslands near Ili. We departed from Yining City and took the highway all the way, with a toll fee of 184 RMB. The entrance ticket to the scenic area, which includes the shuttle bus, costs 135 RMB per person, and the round-trip shuttle to Xuelian Valley is 60 RMB per person.
At the scenic area, we chose the Sky Grassland ticket with the shuttle bus. The shuttle stops at three spots on the way up, and on the way down, it goes directly to the visitor center. So, make sure to get off at each stop to enjoy the attractions. Today, we also added a one-hour horseback riding activity, which costs 80 RMB per person (I also recommend riding in Xuelian Valley for better scenery and fewer people). At the Nomadic Station, you can buy a shuttle ticket to Xuelian Valley. I highly recommend going there as it is the most beautiful spot. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. The reason for recommending Kuqa is: prices here are really low 😭, I booked a four-star hotel with buffet breakfast and lunch 🍜 for 290R. This is the birthplace of 'Naan', and there are many nearby attractions, making it a good place for a mid-journey rest 🌿
❸ S101 National Defense Highway: Worth a visit! Here's a navigation route for you 👉 'Urumqi → Qigu Bridge → Hundred Mile Danxia → Kentes Reservoir → Lujiaowan → Anjihai Grand Canyon', you can choose attractions based on time and road conditions, and if you encounter road closures, you can directly get on the highway❗
❹ Day 3 Sayram Lake ➕ Guozigou is highly recommended ❤️ If you have enough time, it's suggested to stay for 2 days, if only 1 day, be sure to start early as the journey is long❗

1️⃣ The four most worthwhile spots to check in
✔️ Nalati Grassland: Endless grasslands that are utterly refreshing! 🌾
✔️ Sayram Lake: The lake is as clear as a mirror, breathtakingly beautiful! 🌊
✔️ Tianshan Sea of Flowers: Fields of purple lavender, extremely romantic! 🌸
✔️ Kashgar Old Town: Traces of history are everywhere, as if traveling back to ancient times! 🏰
2️⃣ Weather is really key!! 🌦️
▫️ The grasslands and lakes of Xinjiang change with the weather. Overcast and sunny days are completely different worlds!
▫️ If you encounter a rare sunny day, don't hesitate, head straight to Sayram Lake and take a tour around the lake.
3️⃣ Hiking in Shipton's Arch requires good physical strength! 🚶♂️
✔️ If you want to experience the magnificence of the snow-capped mountains up close, Shipton's Arch is a good choice, but it requires 1-2 hours of hiking, and the path is not easy. If you are traveling with the elderly or children, take it easy!
✔️ The shuttle bus in Shipton's Arch is very crowded, it is recommended to start early and try to return before 4 pm.
4️⃣ Thick clothes are a must! 🧥
Xinjiang has a large temperature difference between day and night, and the wind is strong. Even if the day is hot, you must bring thick clothes, otherwise, you will really get a runny nose from the cold!
5️⃣ Ili Grassland, 2-3 selections are enough! 🌾
✔️ There are too many grasslands in Ili, and seeing too many can really lead to aesthetic fatigue! If you like snow-capped mountains, choose Shipton's Arch; if you like forests, choose Qiongkushitai or Chaxi; if you like grasslands, choose Nalati.
✔️ For Nalati, you can skip the internet-famous bridge, but you must go to the Panlong Valley Road, that's where the essence really is! 95% of people will miss this spot.
6️⃣ Golden hour for photography: 7-10 am/pm 📸

Day20 Nalati Grassland: Horse Riding Fate - Uncle's Story
Ken wanted to ride a horse, but he wouldn't go for the paid horse-riding services in the scenic area. However, he was determined to find a way to ride a horse. On the way from the 'Sky Grassland' to the 'Nomadic Family,' he deliberately slowed down the car. At first, I didn't notice, but later, when he stopped halfway and shouted to an uncle sitting on a motorcycle across the road: Can I ride a horse? How much? I didn't quite catch the uncle's response, but I heard Ken say: You lead the way! The uncle then started his motorcycle. As the motorcycle passed a sign that read: Tourists are not allowed to enter, we followed the motorcycle and drove straight in, leaving the tourist area and heading into the quiet depths of the grassland. Picture 2 is the first back view the uncle left me.
The road on the grassland needs to be remembered by the brain, there are no road signs, just like an old horse knowing the way, left and right, over a small hill, then over a muddy pit, and after a while, the motorcycle stopped in front of three yurts, surrounded by wire outside. Oh! This is probably the uncle's home. I saw an aunt and his daughter.
The uncle didn't say anything, and after a while, he rode the motorcycle away again, and after a while, he came back with two horses. He didn't say a word during the whole process, and we just waited and observed. He somehow produced two saddles and bridles, he armed one horse, and his daughter prepared the other. The proficiency of the two was self-evident.
Ken reminded me to confirm the price again later, and I needed to record it. The daughter seemed to think the price her dad quoted to Ken was too low, so she confirmed it with the uncle again.
