An eruption occured that decimated the village. Although there was no lava involved, the hot smoke from the volcano was more than enough cause all the destruction you see in the pictures. This village has since become a museum and it’s a great place to go to see and learn what happened.

This is a must see while see while in Jogja! This is by far the best volcano museum -- no, the best geology museum. It is brilliantly curated, with in depth education on the geology/vulcanology, as well as the history/sociology/anthropology regarding this amazing volcano and comparing it with other volcanoes around the world. The cool thing here is the pretty decent sized model of Merapi right in the center of the museum as you enter. The Museum has interesting artefacts following the volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi as recent as 2010. They also collect the house and everything inside it which has been covered by ash from the eruption of Merapi. Sample of the rocks, and so on. Not far before you go to Mount Merapi, you meet Mount Merapi Museum. This is a modest museum that was established by a small family (Mr. Kimin and Mrs. Wati). Museum Sisa Hartaku can be translated to My Remaining Treasure Museum. The museum is actually within their house. This house was affected by the Merapi eruption in 2010. The family (initiated by their first child) created this museum to inform people about the last Merapi eruption. Various personal things that were owned by the family are displayed at the museum such as: motorcycles, clothing, cutlery, furniture, pets, television and much more. I got melancholy feeling looking at their clock attached to the wall. The hands of the clock are stuck forever at the moment of the eruption.
