2025 Melbourne Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in October)
Melbourne, Victoria’s lively pulse, mixes cool streets with a creative kick. Laneways tuck away top-notch eats, galleries spill art, and trams rattle through a city that flips from sun to rain in a flash—four seasons might hit by lunch. Beyond the skyline, the Great Ocean Road carves wild shores and Phillip Island’s penguins strut, while St Kilda’s waves lap close. This isn’t just urban swagger; it’s a gateway to Victoria’s rugged charm—where flat white fuels the buzz and coastlines steal the show.

Melbourne Hotel Stay Experience: Park Hyatt Truly Elegant!
Traveling to Melbourne, Australia for a vacation💕? Highly recommend staying at the Park Hyatt Melbourne 🏨. Its location, rooms, and service are absolutely perfect😌.
- Let's start with the location ✔️
Situated near iconic Melbourne Citywalk landmarks like the Parliament House, Carlton Gardens, Museum, and churches. The surrounding area offers Free Tram Zone and metro access, making travel super convenient ✔️.
- Now, about the rooms 🛏️
The rooms are spacious and well-maintained, despite the hotel being open for many years. It exudes a classic luxury vibe ❤️. If your budget allows, opt for the church view rooms for even better photo opportunities 📷.
- The hotel's dining is top-notch 💯
The small menu items at the breakfast buffet are even better than many popular brunch spots. For instance, the pancakes are so good I ordered them every day 🥞. The hotel's Flat White coffee is far superior to those at trendy cafes ☕️, and breakfast offers unlimited refills ☕️.
- In-Room Dining is a great option after a full day of exploring. Dining in your room adds a touch of ceremony 😌, especially after a day trip to the Great Ocean Road 🚗. It saves you the hassle of searching for restaurants on commercial streets 🍴.
- The hotel's wellness center SPA is a luxurious experience 😌
Treat yourself to a facial or massage for ultimate relaxation ❤️.
Melbourne|The mesmerizing blue of Williamstown
Today's weather in Melbourne is absolutely stunning, a rare treat in a city known for its unpredictable climate.
I immediately dashed to Williamstown to enjoy the sea and relax, then headed to the Grazeland food carnival in the evening for a feast. This is how a perfect day should be spent!
Williamstown Travel Guide
Williamstown Beach: The water is so blue it looks like it has a filter on it—every shot is Instagram-worthy!
Gem Pier: The sunset at the harbor is breathtaking, with vibes that are simply unmatched.
Botanical Gardens: Quiet and less crowded, perfect for lying down with a book for the afternoon. 📖
Grazeland Food Festival Feast
20 Booker Street, Spotswood
It's just about a 10-minute drive from Williamstown.
State Library Victoria
When we visited Melbourne, we had the chance to stop by the State Library Victoria. Located right in the heart of the city, it’s incredibly easy to find. As soon as you step inside the building, you can immediately sense its rich history and grandiose architecture.
The highlight for me was definitely the La Trobe Reading Room. This library features a massive octagonal dome ceiling, with tables and lamps beautifully arranged in circular patterns. The atmosphere is serene and truly awe-inspiring, making it an ideal spot for reading or working. Just sitting and admiring the beauty of this room is worth the visit.
Apart from the library itself, the State Library Victoria also hosts various exhibitions. There’s so much to see, from ancient books to diverse artworks. If you’re into history or architecture, this is a must-visit destination. It’s not just book lovers who will be impressed; I couldn’t help but envy the locals who have access to such an amazing place.

Melbourne trip —⛪️🍫🍷🦘
If you’re planning a trip to Melbourne, here are a few must-visit spots that made my journey so memorable. The iconic St Patrick’s Cathedral left me in awe with its towering spires and peaceful atmosphere—it’s one of those places where you just want to pause and take it all in. ⛪️
A short drive away, the chocolate factory was pure happiness; watching the chocolate being made (and sampling way too much!) felt like stepping into a dream. Additionally, you will receive some free chocolate to sample while you explore.🍫
For something more relaxing, I loved spending an afternoon at The Wine Garden, sipping local wines in a cozy setting that felt both elegant and down-to-earth. 🍷And of course, no trip to Australia is complete without meeting the locals—feeding kangaroos up close was easily the highlight of my day, their gentle curiosity making the whole experience unforgettable.🦘
Finally, I bought a large koala as a souvenir for myself!🐨

🇦🇺 Melbourne: Exploring the city
Melbourne city feels like a labyrinth of mystery shops with its secret streets. If you’re in the city for at least a day, here is one suggestion of what you can do!
Federation Square (Corner Swanston St & Flinders St): It’s basically Melbourne’s living room, always buzzing and iconic for people-watching. From here, take just a minute’s stroll over to Hosier Lane to admire the street art. Walls are covered in wild colors, and the art changes all the time, so it’s never the same twice.
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (Birdwood Ave, open daily 7:30am–7pm): Enjoy the lush greenery, birds, and lake views, particularly during the cool autumn season.
Queen Victoria Market (Queen St, open Tues + Thurs–Sun, hours vary): Taste the local flavors and feel its energy. QVM is a mix of fresh food stalls, gourmet bites, and who can forget the friendly vendors from all walks of life.
Fitzroy: Cross the Yarra River and enter the heart of Fitzroy. Brunswick Street is all about chill indie vibes, with quirky shops, dreamy vintage finds, and great coffee spots ☕ at every corner.
Rose Street Artists’ Market (60 Rose St, open Sat–Sun 11am–5pm): Go there if you can. It is where local legends sell handmade goodies, art, and cool crafts. You can actually chat with the artists and maybe score something totally unique.
Quick tips:
Melbourne trams are super easy. Just get a Myki card and hop anywhere.
Tipping is not mandatory, but do tip for exceptional service.
Bring your sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen for the strong Australian sun.

Shortstop Coffee & Donuts in Melbourne
If you're visiting Melbourne and craving delicious donuts, you absolutely cannot miss Shortstop Coffee & Donuts. This shop is incredibly popular among both locals and tourists because their donuts are not your average treats—they are meticulously crafted and uniquely flavored.
Here, you'll find a variety of donut styles, not just the typical fried ones. They offer Raised (soft and fluffy donuts), Cake (dense, cake-like donuts), Cruller (crispy on the outside, soft on the inside twisted donuts), and Filled (stuffed donuts), providing a range of textures to enjoy.
Creative flavors
The menu changes seasonally, but their signature flavors that receive rave reviews include Maple Walnut & Brown Butter (a maple walnut donut glazed with brown butter) with a perfect balance of aroma and sweetness, and Earl Grey & Rose, which combines the taste of Earl Grey tea with a hint of rose. All donuts are freshly made in-house daily, ensuring top-notch quality and taste.
The price per donut generally ranges from $5 to $8 AUD. If you want to try multiple flavors, it's recommended to go for a Box of 6 or Box of 12 for better value.
This shop is also renowned for its coffee, made with high-quality beans from leading roasters, making it the perfect pairing with their donuts.
Limited seating
The shop is relatively small with limited seating, so most people opt for takeout.
Getting there
Shortstop is located at 12 Sutherland St, Melbourne VIC 3000, in Melbourne's CBD, near Melbourne Central and not far from other attractions.

Even the concrete balconies remain original. The only one of its kind in the world: the only McDonald's inscribed on the World Heritage List among 36,000. It outshines the New Zealand Airline McDonald's and the Spanish Marble Shop.
Melbourne's Must-See Shopping Destination
Situated in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, the Block Arcade offers the city's most celebrated boutique shopping experience. Being a key stop on the Golden Mile heritage walk, there's an abundance of activities and sights, including boutique fashion, art, gift shops, vintage jewelry, restaurants, and cafes. This iconic and distinctive location houses renowned retailers like Haigh’s Chocolates, Art Of Dr. Seuss, Basement Discs, Sol Alpaca, Bell & Ross, and Camper Shoes. 🏨Savoy Hotel🏨
There's nothing negative I could really say about the Savoy Hotel. It's not only a pretty hotel but it's a super location with food and public transport literally at your doorstep!🚋
In addition to having a classy, vintage feel (with modern amenities of course!), the hotel is very cosy especially at night, which is good because it keeps you warm from the Melbourne Winters!🥶
The staff at the front desk were helpful too, Mummy made sure Nana would have a key to get in the room as she joined us later, and they also had the room tidied up for her arrival! How lovely!🛏️💐

☦️Beautiful Greek Orthodox Church☦️
Mummy always says she loves Melbourne because of its "wogginess". Lots of Greeks and Italians as well as of course, her people, Serbians. She also loves going to the church, and loves visiting Greek Orthodox churches seeing as Greeks and Serbians are friends. So we went to visit this beautiful church in North Balwyn💙🤍
The beautiful Byzantine art never fails to amaze us. It's incredible! Cuddly and I sat in the front row admiring the Iconostasis at the front. So rich in detail!⛪
We highly recommend this beautiful church, even if just to have a look! The art is mesmerising💒

I want to ask Melburnians, why is there such a carefree sense of freedom that seems to disregard everything else
Gardens everywhere, everywhere! And they're all free~
As soon as the sun comes out, the lawns are full of people. With my friend @Mcdull's Travel Diary, I strolled through gardens, taking photos along the way, and couldn't help but marvel at Melbourne's relaxed vibe~
People running, reading, sunbathing by the roadside, even a convent is full of artistic flair.
🌄Every time I finish visiting NGV, I love sitting on Southbank and daydreaming. Kayaks pass by in front of me, one after another. Turns out a city can be this livable~
·
Here are a few Melbourne gardens I recommend. Go live like a local~
1️⃣Fitzroy Gardens (home to Captain Cook's Cottage, though the outside of the cottage is prettier than the inside)
2️⃣Melbourne Park: When watching the Australian Open, I love walking back to the hotel along Melbourne Park. The Yarra River's relaxed vibe is at its peak.
3️⃣Carlton Gardens: Iconic Exhibition Building + fountain, full of English charm, but I heard it was a University of Melbourne execution ground. International students have a bit of dark humor.
4️⃣Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
5️⃣Albert Park: This is an F1 racetrack! The CBD in the middle of the lake is truly beautiful.
6️⃣Abbotsford Convent: An Italianate convent built in 1889, once one of Melbourne's early charitable convents. Not many people, good for photos.
7️⃣Southbank: Although not a park, the Yarra River always holds the souls yearning for freedom~
·
Besides that, Melbourne has its own La La Land, with 2 absolute favorite sunset spots:
1️⃣St Kilda: Stay a bit later, and you can see little penguins come ashore.
2️⃣Point Ormond Lookout: By the sea! All romantic and free souls! I really admire how foreigners are so unashamed about love!
I want to ask Melburnians, is this carefree, relaxed vibe of yours that seems to disregard everything else innate? Melbourne, Victoria
Melbourne is the best! The scale was amazing!

🥯 DROM – A Pastry Playground with bold flavors
Had brunch at Drom Bakery and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I ordered the salmon bagel with an iced latte, and wow — it was so damn good! The bagel was fresh and chewy, and the dressing inside gave it an extra punch that made every bite unforgettable.
Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying their famous pastries — and let me tell you, I went a little overboard (zero regrets). What stood out most was the Chocolate Hazelnut Richer Moon Rock — rich, nutty, and perfectly balanced. Definitely my favourite.
What makes Drom special is not just the flavour, but also the playful shapes and creative fillings. Every pastry looks like a little edible art piece, and the textures + flavours are chef’s kiss. Sweet, savoury, surprising — a perfect combo in every bite. WORTH EVERY CALORIES! 🤤🥐

I’ve been to this area so many times but never actually went inside the Shrine of Remembrance — let alone realized you could go all the way to the top! This visit completely opened my eyes. The architecture is stunning, and the exhibitions are powerful and detailed, beginning with stories from World War I.
🧭 What to Expect
🔹 The Crypt (Underground Sanctuary)
Located at the heart of the memorial, the Crypt was built to honor the units that served in WWI. The space features a striking sculpture of a father and son — representing two generations who served in the 1914–1918 and 1939–1945 world wars.

From the underground sanctuary to the upper gallery, the experience is both moving and informative. Whether you’re a history buff or just enjoy great architecture and panoramic city views, this place is a must-visit.

🥞The Best Pancakes In Australia!🥞
Whenever we go to Melbourne, mummy always takes us to Pancake Parlour, where they make some of the best pancakes! Mummy likes to go all out and have chocolate fudge and chocolate chips on hers!🍫
We also enjoy the interiors of Pancake Parlour, it has character and is very pretty! Melbourne is good for places that look like art as well as the food. This one in particular is in Melbourne Central, but there are others around as it's a chain. Give it a try! You won't regret it! You'll probably keep going back for seconds like we do!🍽️
PS Fun fact for Brisbane residents: There's a pancake place in Brisbane called Pancake Manor, which we also have a post on. Like Parlour, it's also a chain, and their pancakes are just as yummy! They make waffles too🧇

Blazing sun in the morning, sudden downpour at noon, and gusty winds by evening—Melbourne’s "four seasons in a day" is no joke! 👒🌂 Essentials: sunglasses + compact umbrella + light jacket.
🐧【Don’t Mess with Wildlife】
In protected areas like Phillip Island, flash photography is banned when viewing penguins. No touching penguins or feeding kangaroos🦘—respecting animals means protecting the ecosystem.
🔥【Indigenous Culture Etiquette】
At Aboriginal cultural sites: no photos, no touching, and stay within boundaries. Listen carefully to guides before taking action~
🚦【Traffic Flows the Opposite Way!】
Australia drives on the left. Before crossing the street, look right first! If you’re used to right-side traffic, stay extra alert🧠.
🏖️【Beautiful Beaches, But Stay Safe!】
Watch for rip currents, undertows, and stinging marine life⚠️. Swim only in lifeguarded zones, and don’t push your limits if you’re not a strong swimmer—it’s dangerous! And don’t forget sunscreen—Australia’s UV rays are brutal.
🔥【Summer Fire Warnings Are Serious】
Melbourne summers are peak bushfire season. Before camping or picnicking in the wild, check local fire danger ratings. Download the 【VicEmergency】 app for official alerts.
🚋【Free Tram Zone—No Need to Tap!】
Trams within Melbourne’s CBD are free—no need to tap your card! Tapping will charge you unnecessarily, so don’t get fined by mistake~
🚗【Beware of the "Hook Turn"⚠️】
Melbourne’s quirky Hook Turn rule means you can’t turn right directly at certain intersections. Instead, wait on the far left for the green light → then turn. Look for signage or use navigation if confused.
📸【Drone Users: Know the Rules】
Melbourne has many no-fly zones: airports, military areas, and dense urban spaces. Drone altitude, distance, and flight times are strictly regulated! Check CASA’s website or register for permits—fines are painfully high.
🧳 Finally, a "Melbourne Survival Checklist":
✅ Book tickets early—don’t wing it
✅ Always carry an umbrella + jacket
✅ Admire wildlife from a distance—no touching or feeding
✅ Switch to "left-side mode" for traffic
✅ Free trams = no tapping!
💬 Save + share with friends heading to Melbourne—it’s the ultimate "don’t-get-caught-out" guide! 😉

Play or be Played - Squid Games @ Melbourne’s Federation Square
#summervacay #travel #thingstodo #citydaytours #myitinerary #museum
The most interesting thing I did in Melbourne was to play the infamous Squid Games . You know the one where you don’t move when the doll’s head turns . It was exhilarating while it lasted and it was so real , you are not supposed to breathe (which I was caught doing so, oops.)
Chanced upon this event at Melbourne’s Federation Square . Federation Square is a vibrant hub for installations, pop-up events , live music , food and wine experiences. Do check out their website or Time Out Melbourne’s website for upcoming events during your visit .
Walking distance from Flinder’s Street Station and ACMI screen museum.
Worth taking a leisurely stroll , watch K-pop idol hopefuls film and practice trending dances and oh be wary of loads and loads of pigeons. Gorgeous view at night too.
