It is one of the landmarks of Cairo and the tomb of Mohammed Ali. Here is also the Saladin Castle built by Saladin in the 12th century to resist the Crusaders. Nearby are Garbage City and Cave Church, if interested, you can arrange to visit all in one day along the same route. ▪️The overall style is Byzantine, which is built by Mohammed Ali in 1830 following the style of the Grand Mosque of Ottoman Turkey. It took 14 years to complete and has a strong Turkish style. The outer wall is covered with yellow gypsum, which looks dirty from a distance but has its own special taste. The large dome of the prayer hall is about 52 meters high and 21 meters in diameter. The interior lighting is very gorgeous. You can overlook the whole city from the viewing platform when you leave the mosque. ▪️The mechanical clock on the clock tower in the mosque also has a story. It is said that when Ali was in power, King Louis Philippe of France asked Egypt for an obelisk. In 1831, Ali 'generously' gave an obelisk of Ramses II in the Luxor Temple to France. This obelisk still stands in the Place de la Concorde next to the Louvre. As a return gift, the King of France gave Egypt a mechanical clock. It is said that since this clock was moved here, it has never worked, and the Egyptians do not repair it, just leave it here. ▪️There are many people taking wedding photos in the backyard. Mosque of Muhammad Ali is one of the most important landmarks and tourist attractions of Cairo. This place is not located in down town, however It can be reached easily by taxi or public transport. The whole visit, including taking pictures, should last between 1 to 2 hours. The place is really well preserved and is a pleasure to see. This is a place you must fell proud to visit and experience as it’s part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Women must be dressed appropriately with no revealing clothes and shoulder should be covered.
