[2025 Mokpo Attraction] Travel Guide for Mokpo Gatbawi Rock (Updated Jul)

#wecreate Gatbawi Rock is a natural sandstone and tafoni formation near the mouth of the Yeongsangang River on the coast of Yonghae-dong in Mokpo. Take Bus 15 from Mokpo train station, and then head toward the ocean, then cross the bridge. Gatbawi is named after its shape, which is said to look like two men wearing traditional Korean hats. The rocks are actually made of two individual formations measuring 8 meters and the other is 6 meters. For a pleasant walk along the sea for around a kilometer, you will be headed to Mokpo Peace Square, which is also known as Pyeonghwa Plaza. This stretch of marine road have beautiful sculptures, convenient facilities, cafes and restaurants for families and lovers.

Getting There - Mokpo is easily accessible by all kinds of public transportation and has both a bus terminal and train station. Attractions - Pyeongwha Square and Gatbawi Rock are famous attractions. Two rocks rise up. The rock of Gatbawi Rock is a tuff formed by volcanic ash. Gatbawi Rock changes infinitely depending on the direction you look at it. I planned to go out to the sea early in the morning and watch the sunrise at Gatbawi Rock, one of Mokpo's three scenic spots, but unlike yesterday, the weather did not cooperate. Instead, I saw an infinite transformation. I start another transformation by looking at Gatbawi Rock, which looks different depending on where I stand on the seawalk, and Yeongsan River, which is faintly visible in the fog.

Gatbawi Rock is made of natural sandstone and tafoni (small cave-like features found in sandstone and other granular rocks, with rounded entrances and smooth concave walls). It stands between 6 to 8 meters (20-26 feet). There are also two folk legends surrounding the formation of the rocks. The first legend is about a poor young man who lived with his sick father and sold salt. He then worked as a farmhand for a wealthy family to make enough money to cure his father's illness. Though he did well at the job, his master didn't pay him. When the young man returned home after one month, he found his father's dead body. The man was upset that he did not care for his father that month, as he was working to have enough money to cure him. Then he thought the least he could do was to try to make his father comfortable in the afterlife. Unfortunately, as the young man was carrying his father's body in a coffin, he slipped and dropped the coffin into the sea. He felt awful about accidentally burying his father underwater. To make amends for his action, the young man stayed in that same spot, wearing a bamboo hat until his death so that he could not see the sky. After his death, the two rocks rose up at Gatbawi. Another legend is that when Buddha and a disciple traveled the Yeongsan River, they stopped to rest at Gatbawi. Then, they continued on their journey, leaving behind their hats. It is said that their hats became the rocks, making them known as the "monk rocks." The legends are fascinating, and I also enjoyed the stroll around the nature reserve.
