The Mojiko Retro Area, which is right outside JR Mojiko Station, is a pleasant seaside area. Walking here feels like stepping into a different time and space. Key attractions include the Blue Wing pedestrian bridge that opens and closes at regular intervals, the Railway Museum, the Old Mitsui Club, the Former Moji Customs Building, and the Mojiko Observation Deck. The Mojiko Observation Deck ticket costs 300 yen. Although the view from the deck is not as dazzling as that of a bustling metropolis, the ticket is cheap, and you can still enjoy a cup of coffee up there. If it's mealtime, you must try the baked curry. The charred cheese paired with the rich curry is especially delicious. It was so good that I even bought a curry pack to take home. After visiting the retro area, a half-hour walk will take you to the Kanmon Bridge pedestrian underpass. The Kanmon Strait is the sea between Kyushu and Honshu. After crossing it, you will reach Shimonoseki in Honshu. Therefore, a 15-minute walk through the Kanmon Bridge pedestrian underpass allows you to experience the fun of traveling from Kyushu to Honshu. For the trip, we took the Sonic train from Hakata to Kokura Station and then transferred to the JR Kagoshima to Mojiko Station, which took about 1 hour. (Even though there is a JR Northern Kyushu Area Pass, you cannot take the Shinkansen from Hakata Station to Mojiko.) The specialty of this city is that in the past it was a trading point with other countries. Mojiko Port is a large international shipping port in Kyushu. As for Mojiko Station, it was inspired by the train station in Italy, making the atmosphere look retro. Whether it's the train station, the buildings, or the train station itself, it's very old. Strolling through the retro waiting room inside the station and admiring the exquisite window frames and old-fashioned chandeliers, it feels like traveling back to a hundred years ago. For lunch, choose a nostalgic restaurant nearby and taste the local specialty curry. In the afternoon, take a stroll through the nostalgic district of Mojiko and enjoy the scenery of the Western-style buildings and the harbor. At dusk, climb up the port observation tower and look out at the sunset that turns the entire sea surface golden. The romantic atmosphere is unforgettable. Day 2: Literary Coast and City Lights The next morning, I chose to take a small ferry across the Kanmon Strait and feel the sea breeze and the rippling water.
