Atami MOA Museum of Art is located on a mountain and can be reached by bus from Atami JR Station (get on at Platform 8). The museum was founded in 1982 by Mokichi Okada (MOA is an abbreviation of the Mokichi Okada Association). The museum mainly displays modern and contemporary East Asian paintings and ceramics, but there are not many exhibits. The highlight of this museum seems to be not the collection, but the museum building itself, the colorful circular hall, the Tea Garden with beautiful maple leaves, and the viewing platform overlooking Sagami Bay. The museum ticket is JPY 1,760. The visit process is as follows: after the ticket check, enter the Art Avenue, which is to take the 200-meter-long automatic escalator to the viewing platform, passing through the circular hall. The circular hall has a diameter of 20 meters, and the ceiling is projected with the world's largest kaleidoscope made by the famous Japanese kaleidoscope artist Mitsuru Yoda and his wife Yuriko. The background music is a piano piece composed by pianist Yuriko Nakamura specifically for this giant kaleidoscope. From the viewing platform, you can overlook Atami Castle and Sagami Bay. After that, you can visit the exhibits in the museum. After viewing the exhibits, you can visit the museum's garden, the Tea Garden, which has a teahouse and a restaurant. 📍Atami MOA Museum of Art Japanese Garden
📍MOA Museum of Art in Atami, Shizuoka.
It's famous for its hall with a ceiling that looks like a kaleidoscope, but did you know that the Japanese garden inside the museum is also beautiful?
I went there when the leaves were just starting to turn red, and the leaves lit up in the light were beautiful!
There are also paths and places where you can peek inside, which is exciting❗️
The shops in the garden were closed when I went, so it might be a good idea to check in advance!
There's also a small river in the garden, which is also a great way to tickle the hearts of camera lovers📷! (Taking pictures of water is fun, isn't it!)
If you're going to the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, be sure to visit the Japanese garden as well❗️

A Day at MOA Museum of Art
When you visit Atami, besides enjoying the sea, you should definitely spend half a day exploring the MOA Museum of Art. This time, I was lucky enough to catch the Pokemon x Kogei exhibition, which runs until September 9th. In addition to the exhibition, if the weather is nice, the view outside the glass windows is stunning, with blue skies, white clouds, and the ocean, making it a perfect spot for photos. My favorite part is the ceiling art installation in the lobby, which changes patterns to the rhythm of the music. Next time you visit, be sure to check out any special exhibitions they might have. The location is very convenient, just a 10-minute bus ride from Atami Station, making it well worth spending half a day there.

Atami Trip: MOA Museum of Art
#aug_trip
MOA Museum of Art is located on a hill overlooking the sea, a 10-minute buzz ride from Atami Station.
There are many enjoyable spots on the vast grounds, such as the spectacular views, art, Noh theater, gardens, and food, which are hard to believe for a museum.
The illuminated art in the dome-shaped circular hall built underground, about 20 meters in diameter and 10 meters in height, was particularly beautiful.
The garden's green bathing also helped to relieve the summer heat and fatigue.

Pokemon x Craft Exhibition
The 'Pokemon x Craft Exhibition - Great Discovery of Beauty and Craft' has been highly acclaimed since it began touring Japan last year. It even traveled to JAPAN HOUSE in Los Angeles, USA. This exhibition features around 70 pieces created by 20 artists, ranging from national treasures to young emerging talents, all inspired by Pokemon.

MOA Museum of Art in Atami is a must-visit
The regular exhibitions in the museum are a bit boring in my opinion, but the sea view from the mountain is unbeatable. Also, the garden in the mountain is so beautiful that you won't want to leave!
📍Location: 26-2 Momoyama-cho, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture
🚗Transportation: Since it's on the mountain, the bus takes a long time and the wait is long too. Taking a taxi is the most convenient.
👍️Must-visit spot: The café inside the museum offers a beautiful sea view.
🎟️Ticket price: 1600.00 JPY
💗Other tips: Buses and taxis for going down the mountain are hard to catch, so if you are in a hurry, plan your descent time in advance.

Museum of Art in Atami

The MOA Museum of Art is an art gallery in Atami City, Shizuoka. It houses serveral collections, including Japanese and Chinese ceramics, sculpture, calligraphy, textiles, lacquerware, paintings and metalwork. Some of the works are listed as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. This is a must-place if you’re into arts.
I want to travel to Cambodia in 2024.

MOA Museum of Art
This museum is located on a hilltop and north of Atami. It specializes in East Asian art—primarily Japanese and Chinese ceramics, sculpture, metalwork, calligraphy, paintings, and more. Some of the pieces date back over one thousand years, and there are National Treasures among the collection. One of them is Ogata Korin's masterpiece “Red and White Plum Blossoms,” painted on a pair of two-panel folding screens.
In 2024, I want to go back to Atami again.

When you c
When you come to Atami, you can't miss the MOA Art Museum. In the refurbished hall, the "New Materials Research Institute" created by Sugimoto Boss and Sakamoto Ryuichi uses traditional Japanese materials such as Yakusugi, enamel enamel, and tatami to create a modern display space. The museum is located in a hilly area 250 meters above sea level, and Sagami Beach is in front of you. Walking indoors, looking out the window, as if the sea is also part of the exhibition hall.
