The New Fourth Army Su-Zhe Military Region Memorial
The New Fourth Army Su-Zhe Military Region Memorial is located in Wentang Village, Huaikan Township, Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, at the junction of the three provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui. It was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit in 2001 and named a national research and practice education base for primary and secondary school students in 2018.
The memorial hall was originally the Wang family's residence, built during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, with a history of more than 150 years. It is a brick and wood structure. The main house is a two-story, five-bay building with a total of 46 rooms. The entire building is spacious, exquisitely constructed, and ornately decorated.
At the end of 1943, the 16th Brigade of the New Fourth Army advanced to the border area of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui to open up an anti-Japanese base. On February 5, 1945, the inaugural meeting of the Su-Zhe Military Region was held in Wentang Village, with Su Yu as commander. The headquarters of the military region and the political department were stationed in Yangfengwu, and the headquarters of the First Column of the military region, which was reorganized from the original 16th Brigade, moved to the Wang family's residence. In 1985, the New Fourth Army Su-Zhe Military Region Memorial was officially established in the Wang family's residence, with its name inscribed by Jiang Weiqing.
The memorial covers an area of 3,400 square meters and is surrounded by ancient locust trees, ginkgo trees, pines, cypresses, and bamboo. On the west side of the courtyard is the memorial monument where General Su Yu's ashes are placed, and on the east side is the "Fish-Water Relationship Between the Army and the People" sculpture. On the right front is the monument commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the New Fourth Army Su-Zhe Military Region, with the three large golden characters "N4A" engraved on it. "N4A" is the English abbreviation for the New Fourth Army.
The front of the memorial hall's exhibition hall features statues of General Su Yu, General Ye Fei, and three other people surrounded by red flowers. Above them is a red plaque with an inscription by Ye Fei: "Army-civilian unity is invincible."
The four exhibition halls on the upper and lower floors display revolutionary historical relics, including important written materials, photos, military maps, combat weapons, trophies, hospital equipment, banknotes, and grain coupons.
The entire exhibition revolves around the theme of "The New Fourth Army in Western Zhejiang," systematically documenting the combat history of the New Fourth Army Su-Zhe Military Region from the autumn of 1943 to October 1945. It recreates the glorious achievements of the military and civilians and praises the outstanding contributions of generals such as Su Yu, Ye Fei, Liu Xiansheng, Zhong Qiguan, Wang Bicheng, and Jiang Weiqing.
