Hita, also known as Mini Kyoto, is a quiet and peaceful rural town near Fukuoka. #EnjoyJapan Aizawa Lacquerware Studio is located in a quaint building built in the Tenpo era in Mameda-cho. It is said that Hita lacquerware began in the Meiji era when technicians were trained to develop a new industry in this area where forestry was thriving. Now, the owner of this shop is the sole heir to Hita lacquerware. I wanted to replace some old family items, so I bought four pairs of lacquer chopsticks that caught my eye as soon as I entered the shop. The wife recommended that octagonal chopsticks are more popular than square ones these days. They are smooth to the touch. The luster and color will deepen with each use. It was so easy on the wallet that I wondered if it was really okay to pay such a high price for lacquerware. The report written by a nearby elementary school student on a field trip was very good. #Spring0yenTrip The first place we visited in Hita was the streetscape of Mamedamachi. This area flourished as a shogunate territory during the Edo period, and is lined with white-walled merchant houses and stone-paved alleys, making you feel as if you have traveled back in time. It was a fun place just to walk around, with local miso and soy sauce breweries, geta shops, eel restaurants, and more. In particular, at Hara Jirozaemon's miso and soy sauce brewery, the aroma of seasonings made using traditional methods wafted through the air, whetting our appetites. We also spent a relaxing time strolling along the Mikuma River, close to Mamedamachi, and listening to the murmuring of the river.
