[2025 Suzhou Attraction] Travel Guide for Lili Ancient Town (Updated Mar)

The luckiest thing to happen to me in 2025! I discovered this hidden gem of a Jiangnan water town, Lili Ancient Town. I would call it the most beautiful water town in Jiangnan! It has a history of over 2,500 years, and it still retains its original appearance, with ancient houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the smoke and fire of small bridges and flowing water, and more than 100 crisscrossing alleys... The ancient town is not very commercialized, and you won't find any of the usual tourist snacks like fried squid, stinky tofu, or grilled meat skewers. Instead, you'll find authentic local specialties run by local residents, such as tofu pudding, oil cakes, rice wine, and fresh meat wontons... This is probably why I prefer it here. It gives me a more authentic Jiangnan experience! I stayed in the ancient town for three days, but I still wanted more. Lili Ancient Town is located in Wujiang District, Suzhou. It is one of the few towns that has not been fully developed and is still mostly a residential area for local inhabitants. The cobblestone roads are very slippery. 2️⃣Don't buy vacuum-packed pork knuckles from roadside vendors. Even locals don't eat them. 3️⃣Boat tickets stop selling at 4:30pm. Be mindful of the time. Compared to the overly commercialized Zhouzhuang and Tongli, Lili is like a well-kept secret. Go at 7am to have the whole river to yourself, enjoy the rain from a teahouse window at noon, and watch the lanterns light up in the evening. This is what Jiangnan should be! Promise me, next time you go to Suzhou, skip the crowded Shantang Street. This is the real Jiangnan from the book "Blossoms"!

Known as one of the "Four Lis of Jiangnan," Lijiang Ancient Town is a well-preserved ancient town with a history dating back 2,500 years. It still retains the charm of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Qing Dynasty poet Yuan Jiao once described Lijiang with a poem: "Thirty miles of Wujiang, a place called Pear Blossom Village, I am like a fisherman, coming to ask about the ferry to Peach Blossom Spring." It was a cloudy day when I arrived at Lijiang Ancient Town. Entering the scenic area, the first thing I saw was this view. The ancient water towns of Jiangnan are especially suitable for visiting on drizzly days. The air is moist and clear. Strolling through the water town, stone bridges lie over the water, the river flows gently, and green trees sway. Time seems to slow down here, and every corner is filled with poetic leisure. Lijiang Ancient Town has a lot of snacks, all with unique water town characteristics. You can try different snacks throughout your visit. Among them, the three most famous signature delicacies are Youdun (fried glutinous rice balls), Taochang (stuffed intestines), and spicy chicken feet. Youdun is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Every bite offers a wonderful experience of the perfect fusion of glutinous rice and fillings, making it irresistible. Taochang has a century-old craftsmanship. It is not only a taste bud enjoyment but also a display of craftsmanship. Every bite is a perfect combination of large and small intestines, with a particularly solid texture.
