Lake Ashi - Enjoy the Stunning View of Mount Fuji from the Lake
Lake Ashi is located on the western side of Hakone Town, covering an area of approximately 690 hectares with a depth of 723 meters. It was formed by volcanic activity. The scenery here changes with the seasons, especially the autumn foliage and winter snow, which are particularly enchanting. Traveling from Tokyo to Hakone is very convenient, as you can take the Odakyu Romancecar directly to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Once in Hakone, you can use the Hakone Free Pass, which includes all local transportation and is very cost-effective.
Must-Visit Attractions
Hakone Shrine: Established in 757, this shrine is famous for its vermilion torii gate and lakeside scenery. Visitors can pray for good relationships and happiness here.
Owakudani: This is an active volcanic valley with impressive steam vents and a strong sulfur smell. Don't forget to try the local black eggs, which are said to prolong life.
Pirate Sightseeing Cruise: Take this unique boat to tour Lake Ashi and enjoy the lakeshore scenery and distant views of Mount Fuji.
Food Recommendations
Akakura: This restaurant is famous for its steamed set meals, using fresh local ingredients for an authentic taste.

Hakone Lake Ashi Fireworks Festival
Hakone Lake Ashi is a popular destination for many Hong Kong residents. The most famous attractions include the reflection of Mount Fuji, the Hakone Pirate Ship, and the Torii gate of Hakone Shrine on the lake. If you happen to visit at the right time, you must not miss the Lake Ashi Fireworks Festival.
The Lake Ashi Fireworks Festival is held twice a year, in summer and winter. This time, we visited in early February, coinciding with the winter fireworks festival. It was our first time watching the fireworks over the lake, with the pitch-black background only illuminated by the faint lights of the pirate ship on the lake and the small silhouette of Hakone Shrine on the shore. Although these two light sources were very small, they perfectly highlighted the unique features of Hakone, making the fireworks festival a delightful and visually pleasing experience.

Hakone - A Relaxing and Comfortable Journey
Traveling west from Kamakura on the JR line, it takes about an hour to reach Odawara Station. Odawara Station is also the gateway to the famous hot spring destination - Hakone. Odawara Castle itself is also of historical value, but unfortunately, due to time constraints, we couldn't visit it. Those who have been to Japan know that transportation costs are very high, so travelers should make good use of various transportation passes to save on travel expenses. Starting today, we will use the Fuji Hakone Pass from Odakyu, allowing us to travel from Hakone to Lake Kawaguchi without any hassle!
~ Hakone-Yumoto ~
We set off early yesterday morning, and today the most important thing is to rest well. So, the first day's itinerary is to visit Hakone-Yumoto for a hot spring bath. Hakone-Yumoto has a history of over 1200 years, and the hot spring street is quite well-developed. Among them, there are many 'day-use' hot spring facilities, which means you can enjoy a hot spring bath for one to two hours without staying overnight, making it very convenient for passersby. The hot springs can relieve nerve pain and muscle soreness and also have skin-beautifying effects, making them a favorite for people of all ages.
~ Hakone Shrine Heiwa no Torii ~
After enjoying the healing hot spring, we had a simple meal of udon made with hot spring water in the hot spring street and continued our journey. We took the Hakone Tozan Bus, which is also included in the pass, from Hakone-Yumoto to Motohakone Port. A 10-minute walk from Motohakone Port leads to the Heiwa no Torii of Hakone Shrine, located in the middle of the sea. Shrines in Japan often have torii gates, and after visiting the unique Zeniarai Benten Shrine yesterday, today we visited the special sea torii. The red torii against the blue sea is perfect for photos!
~ Hakone Pirate Ship ~
Next, we returned to Motohakone Port to board the Hakone Pirate Ship, also included in the pass, to enjoy the views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi. The pirate ship's design is very unique, with several different styles, not all the same! Shortly after setting sail, we saw the small Heiwa no Torii and the towering Mount Fuji behind it. On the second day, Mount Fuji continued to accompany us, but today we were closer and could see it more clearly! The one-hour boat ride quickly brought us to Togendai Port, where we transferred to the Hakone Ropeway to our next destination, Owakudani.
~ Owakudani ~
Before the ropeway reached Owakudani Station, a strong smell of sulfur hit our noses. Owakudani is a volcanic valley filled with sulfur springs and hot springs. From the observation deck, you can see sulfur vents and gushing springs, which are very impressive. The specialty of Owakudani is eggs boiled in sulfur spring water, which turn black due to the sulfur, making them very unique. However, due to the strong sulfur smell, we only stayed briefly before continuing our journey, taking the ropeway and the Hakone Tozan Cable Car, also included in the pass, to our hotel in Gora. Since Hakone is a rural area and not a city, shops and transportation do not operate late, so it's safer to return to the hotel before dark.

Enjoy a refreshing soak in the hot springs of Hakone, Japan - Lake Ashi and Lake Kawaguchi offer stunning views of Mount Fuji.
Near Tokyo, Japan, is the town of Hakone, which can be reached by taking the JR train. Hakone is a great place to soak in hot springs ♨️, with hotels and guesthouses of all sizes offering their own hot springs. We booked a hot spring hotel package with excellent service, and could soak in the hot springs both morning and night. The pools in the morning and evening were different, and we could enjoy the view of Mount Fuji and the surrounding scenery while soaking in the hot springs. It was a true luxury.
Lake Ashi is peaceful and beautiful, and Lake Kawaguchi reflects Mount Fuji. When you wake up in the morning, clouds float over the top of Mount Fuji like a fairyland.

LAKE ASHI (JAPAN) IS BACK!
Due to COVID, Lake Ashi was closed for some time and is now open again. This location is a must-see as it is one of the most scenic places to visit for the scenery and the onsen spa.
Three thousand years ago, the vapour from an eruption of Mount Kashima's volcano created this location. The lake water originated from a spring near the lake's bottom. Please be advised that swimming is prohibited in Lake Ashi.

The amazing experience in Lake Ashi
Getting there: There are buses from Mishima Station to Hakone-machi and Moto-Hakone every hour.
Highlights: Lake Ashinoko was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano's last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone.
There are sightseeing boats, operate between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi at the lake's southern shores and Togendai and Kojiri at the lake's northern end. A boat cruise from one end of the lake to the other takes roughly 30 minutes and costs 1020-1200 yen. It was one of the best experience!
The best views of the lake in combination with Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone which is a few steps south from the sightseeing boat pier.🤩

Cruise on Lake Ashi
Lake Ashi
Address: Motohakone, Hakone, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa 250-0522, Japan
This is one of the routes included in Hakone Freepass. I will say this is a must-do attraction. There are fixed timing so it is better you check their departure timing and also cater in waiting time. Embark on this cruise and you will get to see an amazing caldera lake with views of Mt Fuji on lucky days.
This caldera was formed more than 3000 years ago when it erupted. To be as lucky as me to see Mt Fuji, you may try this. Come during winter seasons and take the cruise ride in the early morning or late afternoon. Don’t worry if you did not get to see it. I also did not get lucky when I came in summer.

Lake Ashi , also referred to as Hakone Lake or Ashinoko Lake, is a scenic lake in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshū, Japan. It is a crater lake that lies along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a complex volcano that last erupted in 1170 CE at Ōwakudani. The lake is known for its views of Mt. Fuji, its numerous hot springs, historical sites, and ryokan. The lake is located on the Tōkaidō road, the main link between Kyoto and Tokyo. Lake Ashi is a representative attraction of Hakone. It is also a volcanic lake formed by volcanic activity. It is the most charming tourist attraction in Hakone. It can overlook the Lake Ashinoko in the gondola. If it is in the evening, when the weather is good, The lake of Ashi is full of golden light, giving people a calm and settled beauty. The best thing is to take a pirate ship to visit Lake Ashi. Of course, the weather is a big factor. If it is raining, dont say Mount Fuji, even the shore. The red torii on the side is also not very clear. If the weather is fine, it is a beautiful view of the lake and the mountains. The beautiful scenery of the blue sky and the sky, sitting around the pirate ship, will be pleasing to the eye.
[Tips]

Scenic views of Lake Ashi
#2024wish
This stunning work of nature has become iconic thanks to its breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. On clear days visitors can see the unmistakable mountain rising above the trees and, occasionally, witness its reflection in the still waters. Surrounding Lake Ashi is a relatively undeveloped coast of lush woods and quaint onsen towns.
I want to visit this lake again with my friends.

Lake Ashi
#2024wish This place really offers the most in the fall, end of October and first half of November when the leaves are all changing and it isn't terribly cold. The lake combined with the Hakone Shrine, beautiful tour boats, and Owakudanai is one of the best one day to two day trips I have ever had and I'm sure many other people can agree. It's always a popular sight anytime of the day and year. Also there's a beautiful sit-in cafe that has a fantastic view of the lake if you get a window seat. Its the perfect place to enjoy some pastries and coffee, or you can bring them on the boat too. It's easily a 10/10, I've been here three times and it's always a good time.
I wish to go back in 2024

Beautiful Lake Ashi, Hakone
Our beautiful two day stay in Hakone allowed us to explore Lake Ashi on a replica pirate ship on this fantastic clear Autumn day. The sun was shining and a cool breeze kept us chilled as we did a circular route around the lake which offered amazing glimpses of Fujisan in the distance. The roads and mountain passes are a must for Initial D fans, and there are many wonderful places to visit along these mountain roads. The Hakone ropeway or cable car is also near the terminal for the Pirate ship and worth a ride, though getting good photos of Fujisan from the cable car is difficult. Also highly recommend the the Venetian Glass Musuem with its lovely Venetian glass display and delectable restaurant where you can enjoy good food, a cold drink and some great views.

Gone fishing at Lake Ashi
We accessed Mount Fuji via Lake Ashi.
Though we did not get a full view of Mount Fuji because it was not a clear day.
we were treated to the amazing view at lake ashi or lake ashinoko. we took pictures, ate piping hot noodles by the lake. we chanced upon a local fishing and he was kind enough to let us try his fishing gears. unfortunately though, we did not catch any fish.
we enjoyed the sight a lot that we missed the last bus trip and have to access another route just to get to the nearest train station. at the station, we missed the last train back to osaka. so just a word of caution, to those who are planning on a day trip, it is better to book an overnight trip there to maximize the beauty of the place since it is considerably far from the station.
