Kowloon Park is big public park in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is a well-tended park and a peaceful place for those who want to spend their weekend afternoon here. A perfect park to have a good walk, to enjoy quiet time, and to just enjoy the tranquilty nature brings. Another great thing about this park, NO ADMISSION FEE. Isn't that great? Located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Park covers 13.5 hectares. It boasts numerous lush green trees, which attract a great variety of birds. A shady park to relax from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. In addition, Kowloon Park offers multiple fountains, a Bird Lake, a Chinese-style garden, a sculpture gallery, a water garden, a bird garden, and plant maze, etc. I always enjoyed the fountains during summer as they freshen my day perfectly. #passionpassport The park runs to parallel to Nathan Road and there are several entrances from Nathan Road, Haiphong Road, Austin Road and Canton Road and there is also a pedestrian footbridge link from China Ferry Terminal at China Hong Kong City. A central avenue runs through the park from Haiphong Road to Austin Road and the northern end of the park is the location for Kowloon Park Sports Centre with multi-purpose arena, dance room, fitness room and squash courts and also Kowloon Park Swimming Pool which has both indoor and outdoor pools. Getting There - just go to MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Exit A1 and one of the entrances to the park is next to the exit. Attractions - you can go there for a morning/afternoon walk where you just need to relax and see something “green” in the nature other than your Dekstop default background picture. But if you want to do more, you can go to take a look at the permanent exhibition of Hong Kong cultural heritage, which is free of charge for everyone. Or you can go to see Flamingo pond where you can see dozen of pink flamingos. Or if you fancy some activity with water, you can go to the swimming pool. Hotels - the park located near chungking mansion and mirador mansion, building with tons of cheap hostels, or if you want to stay in hotel, Holiday Inn Golden Mile which located in Nathan Road can become your place of stay. Food & Restaurants - if you go back to Nathan Road, you could see a lot of shopping malls and different restaurants all around the street. My tips is just that you try to wander around a bit to see if you can find anything you like. Nice park. Lots of areas to suit the needs of many. However, keep in mind this park has been closed a number of times due to protests. The mosque that had some vandalism is on southern corner on Nathan Road. The police station where protests have occurred is on the northern end of the park on Nathan Road. The swimming complex is amazing and has extensive hours. The aviary has many beautiful birds. #givethanks

For Hong Kong locals, the Kowloon Park is a good venue for a nice afternoon reading session, a place for sitting-down after shopping at the nearby Park Lane, or otherwise swimming at its swimming pool. We take its leisure purpose for granted and few people look for its historic significance beyond its role as a park. I have never known the history of Kowloon Park until recently, when I came across photographs of the war relics on site. The predecessor of the Kowloon Park is the Whitfield Barracks. At the time, the location at which Kowloon Park now occupies was strategically advantageous for defense purposes. It started as a military base as one could overlook the Kowloon side of the Victoria Harbour there. It was meant to be a temporary encampment in the beginning. When the British took over Kowloon in 1861, they named it the Whitfield Barracks and it became a permanent military site. At first, the Indian garrison was stationed at the Whitfield Barracks. At one point, the Whitfield Barracks had more than 85 buildings. Of all of these buildings, only four barrack blocks and the battery were preserved to the present. Given this early history of the Kowloon Park, there is still a site in the current park where military relics stand. The Kowloon West II Battery was built during 1878 and 1880. It was built in concrete. There are three gun emplacements, a command center, ammunition storage spaces and a machinery room. Each gun emplacement was fixed with a 7-inch cannon. The use of the fortress ceased in 1916.
