The only route between Kohama Island and the outlying islands is via Ishigaki Island. Himurubushi and Hoshino Risonare are the two major tourist hotels on Kohama Island, but the port is quite crowded when the shuttle buses for these two are in operation. If you are staying at another hotel, we recommend arriving at the port a little earlier on your return. You may be in trouble if the bus is full and you cannot get on. Apparently, there are also extra buses during events and Golden Week. The toilets are surprisingly clean. I could only find about three places to eat nearby. The juice from the vending machine costs about 30 yen more than the one sold in the mainland. We stayed at Haimurubushi on Kohama Island. The vast grounds had a beach, a place to watch the sunset, and even animals like goats and cows, so we really enjoyed the resort. It was a cold day in November, so the hot springs felt great and helped us refresh our bodies.

Kohama Island is about 30 minutes from the ferry terminal of Ishigaki Island. It is the island where the popular drama "Churasan" was set, and even today many tourists visit the island. I visited for my niece's wedding. Although the weather was unfortunate at times, it was a very pleasant island. Haimurubushi Hotel is a great hotel that you can enjoy even for long stays because they can do anything you want. Next time, I'd like to come back and enjoy the grounds and activities at my leisure.

I finally visited the Yaeyama Islands, specifically Kohama Island, which I had always wanted to go to. It takes about 30 minutes by regular ferry from the Euglena Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal. The round trip costs 2,700 yen. This island was the setting for the drama 'Churasan.' It takes about 50 steps up the stairs to reach the observation deck of Mount Ufudaki. There, you will find a monument dedicated to 'Churasan.' The view of the blue sky and sea from there is absolutely stunning. The Kohagura Residence, which was used as a filming location, is a private home, so you can only view it from the outside. The Sugar Road was used as the main character's school route. The nostalgic scenery is highly recommended☺️

I love Kohamajima. I always stay at Haimurubushi. The weather is unstable in March...strong winds mixed with light rain. But here, you can relax in your room and enjoy a panoramic view of the sparkling sea from the large public bath. Dinner is the cheapest at 6,000 yen, but it's still incredibly delicious.
